Default Car Phone Options

I'm trying to work out the different phone options, their functionality and such that's available for the D3.

I currently have the option of bluetooth or the phone that's under the arm rest in my 2006.
The phone under the armrest is a Nokia 6230, by changing the cradle I can fit different phones.

Different types of phones, connection and places.
I've seen phones in the armrest, phones under the armrests to the side, phones under the armrest in the middle, Audi branded handsets, swappable cradles for different handles and also RSaP and Bluetooth to connect a phone wireless.

There also appears to be different options within the MMI but the only ones I can think of at the moment is text, bluetooth and normal hard wired.

There might be other options but at the moment the above is all I can think of. Soon as I find any more I'll post it up.

Anyone got any knowledge they'd like to share about these phones?

Edited to include information from 'IT' - Thanks for that extra info.

Hi Scott; can't say much about the phones and adapter plates as I've always been happy with my Motorola under the amrest, with SIM adapter beneath it.

However, from what I've seen over many 2G MMI D3 logs in recent years [and what the MMI CDs support] there are three different types of A8 ECU.

4E0 862 333 x [9ZJ] : known as "TELEFONMODUL EU" in VCDS - Original Phone prep. using the MMI to talk and listen [via car speakers and mic.] and needs user supplied SIM in the reader in the armrest. This ECU onlly supports Bluetooth via an aerial in the armrest to connect to an optional Motorola Handset [probably for back seat executives]. The MMI can only receive text messages; the optional handset can also send them. This ECU has Purple [external roof aerial] and yellow [BT aerial in armrest] connectors. Latest firmware = 0770

4E0 862 335 [9ZF] : known as "Handyvorb2" in VCDS - Later A8 ECU that assumed a Bluetooth phone connection. This ECU only has a yellow BT connector for a plug-in aerial and no external aerial wired into the car. Latest firmware = 1130

4F1 862 335 [9ZW] : known as "BTA" in VCDS - Even later ECU 'borrowed' from A6 [hence 4F.. prefix to HW part number] that allowed BT phone connection but had an external aerial as well. This ECU has Purple [external roof aerial] and yellow [BT aerial] connectors. Latest firmware = 1120

Julian,

I got the Handyvorb2 which allows either BT connection or a handset via the cradle.
Also got call history, dial, phone book and the ability to copy the phone book to the car.

BT Motorola unit only allows Bluetooth connection via the Motorola handset, that's annoying.
What function does that give you via the MMI?

When you say talk and listen via the hifi, it uses the speakers from the stereo and the microphone in the roof?
Same as the others then?

I no longer have the Audi-Motorola phone module, as I upgraded it to the universal bluetooth control module under the carpet as per another thread.
If I still had the original one, it would be fun to try spoofing the BT MAC address of an Android phone to be the same as the existing Motorola and see if they could pair and what else might function.

I read your thread.

That's a good idea. would be interesting.

What function did you get from the Motorola kit?

I presume the original ECU was designed before general availability of BT cell phones. [It must have been designed and engineered by Audi and Motorola [who made the ECU] long before the ECUs went into cars in late 2002].

It uses the info database in the car and makes the car hifi and mic. in the mirror 'the phone'. It tracks incoming and outgoing calls so it's just like a self contained phone. The optional handset [which was £100 on top of the £480 that the ECU cost] doesn't participate in any way in normal use. You hear the ring on the sound system and if you choose to answer by 'button pushing' the MMI, it pauses the CD or AMI and enables the mic.

The ECU generates a BT signal but only to connect to the optional handset which sits in a cradle only designed to charge it [there are no other connections]. I presume this was for passengers rather than the driver, but although optional, every car that had the ECU seems to have had the handset too.

The MMI can read incoming texts but can't generate or send one. You CAN enter and send texts on the handset if you have one linked.

To summarise the differences:

a) In the Motorola ECU, the ECU handles the call [and may BT it to the handset]
b) In the Handyvorb2 and BTA, the attached phone handles the call [and BTs it to the ECU]

There are 3 distinct versions of phone functionality (as largely covered by responses already)

1) The original Audi handset with proprietary Bluetooth to give a handsfree handset. Needed a dedicated SIM in it, so was a bit pointless by todays standards. Build Code 9ZJ.

2) The most common one in the 2G era - The Phone preparation, where you have the interchangeable cradles that click into the multipin plate under the armrest. But, crucially, also gives regular Bluetooth handsfree capability - but - can be a be limited on the early firmware versions, has trouble with early iphones etc. This version cannot do text messages on the car as it never has access to a sim directly. Build code 9ZF

3) Phone prep high - Bluetooth as number 2, but with support for Bluetooth rSAP also using an external aerial like option 1. This gives an amazing stable and clear signal even in bad areas as it uses the cars aerial gear rather than hoping your poor little mobile phone can break through the layers of glass. Build Code 9ZW

If you have option 1, it is easy to swap to option 2, or better still 3. But if you are factory built with option 2, then you have no external aerial cabling and its a faff to retrofit. Worth it though.

In any case, build code QF2 is a handset in the car. This was always supplied with option 1, and was optional with option 3. I don't believe it was available (or even useful!) with option 2.
