Default Noisy air con compressor

Had this 3 times now on VAG cars Passat, A6 and now the '8'

Basically if when you have the air con (climate not on ECON) on, from the cabin you can hear a whirring noise that changes as the rev's go up and down, and will be resonant at certain revs, in my case about 2500rpm you most probably have low gas. Although the air con will still feel cool, it will probably have low capacity. There is no abnormal noise from the compressor itself if you listen outside, it seems to resonate internally.

Apparently the '8 units are very high capacity anyway, so even if you are a bit low on gas it would probably cool ok, although the compressor will make the whirring noise.

To check if you have the problem, simply press ECON or turn the climate off (on my D2 press fan - until it gets to min and switches off) while the engine is running, and see if things get quieter.

It annoyed me so much I just used the climate in ECON mode all the time, that is until the weather warmed up. £75 later for a vac out, leak test and recharge, and its now ice cold and no whirring, just V8 music to my ears!

I've got a similar problem. It's an annoying screech when the car is cold. It stops if you turn off the climate unit or when the car warms up. I've had the aircon regassed (a bit less than £75) but it made no difference.

I've ordered a new air con pump to see if that fixes it.

Bad luck, how much is that going to cost?

I should have said this noise is only heard on the inside of the car, if its a noise coming from the compressor externally, then its probably something else, I think the clutches are physical weak point, although on the newer cars they are now permanently engaged according to my local indi mech.

I'm going to try a used one from A8 Parts which will hopefully sort it out. The price of a new pump would probably finish me off!

My D3 has shagged A/C Garage have replaced the cheap bits and are expecting to change the compressor next week, but all under warranty Crap that it was 24 degrees in Glasgow today though.

Had a problem with the Wife's Kia Sedona a few years ago... There's no low-pressure cut-off on them, so a stone had holed the A/C radiator, all the coolant had ****ed into the atmosphere and the pump was running with no lubrication, got hot and died.

600 quid later for a compressor, radiator and fitting/charging And that was a second hand unit.. new compressor was over a grand by itself!!!
