How far on an 'empty' tank
I know we've all probably had the occasional trip when the nearest petrol station has been further away than we'd like, and the DIS range display has fallen to single figures!
I've pushed mine passed zero once or twice, but I just wondered who's got the most bottle and pushed it well below that (I mean, how far did you drive after the DIS said zero?). I filled up at a range of 5 miles last night and only managed to get 78.25 litres into it. IIRC, it's a 90 litre tank - so will all of that be 'available' or is there some 'dead' volume?

My previous 8 stopped when it got to zero so I've never pushed it that far since!

My D3 (4.2 TDI) was about 45 miles on zero, before it stopped 500m form the fuel station on a slight uphill incline

Done about 30 miles on mine showing '0' and did not run out fuel. When the warning light comes on there should be about 12-12.5l in the tank, that should be enough for 70 miles of easy driving but DIS only shows about 30m at this point and it drops to 0 after 10-15 miles of driving.

I'm not so brave. I usually fill up long before I even get the warning, often when there's still a good quarter of a tank.
My car had the infamous fuel tank problem when I bought it, caused by a badly fitted new pump (which I'm told was replaced because the previous pump failed after running out of fuel). It was a year or two before I eventually got it fixed (replaced the entire tank) but, after 'running out' of fuel a few times at just over a quarter of a tank, I think it left me traumatised and cautious of ever running out again On the rare occasion I have allowed the tank to get low enough to trigger the low fuel warning, I've always headed for the nearest fuel station immediately. I've even been known to put a few litres of a lesser fuel in (ie non-V-Power) just to get me to the nearest Shell station.

Due to the poor fuel pump in the D2, its likely most D2's out there have had one replaced at some point.
The process involves removing one of the sender units and pump. Refitting can be quite awkward, and I've seen a range of quality when it comes to the refit over the years I believe this adds to the inconsistencies in the answers to this question. Yes, there should be some reserve at 0 miles, but I've seen D2's die at 5 miles remaining, and some still going 30 miles past. Its not something to test unless you have a full fuel can in the boot, but is worth testing on your own D2 for future reference

Mine got down to 15 today on the way to fill up It made it without any troubles, but I'd rather not push it that far again!

My D2 and D3s used to go past zero quite happily for a bit. I think I managed 87 litres into the D2 at one point.
The A7 on the other hand is considerably more accurate.. When it tells you to fill up, you need to start thinking about it. 65 litre tank takes 62 litres when reading zero, not much wiggle room at all, and with the digital dash, you only get readings in 1/8th tank increments, probably why the DIS is so much more accurate.
