high beam switch intermittent.
Hi guys, I need a check of my logic. My high beams are taking a couple of goes to get on yet the flash still works fine. I'm presuming that as they both operate the same relay that the problem is confined to the switch rather than a relay buried somewhere inscrutable. Sound right? That's if applying huge amounts of contact cleaner and wiggling it a lot has no effect.
Second question is has anyone replaced one of these? On a scale of one to ten how difficult would it be for a baboon with screwdrivers, a club hammer and some gaffer tape to swap? I've done it on 60's and 70's vintage cars but nothing modern with motors and funny stuff in there. I would presume it's not that much of an ar$eache but you never know. Bill

It just so happens I did this the other day....
Remove steering wheel airbag - 2 x torx 30 on the back and disconnect electrical connector. If you power on after this you will need VagCom to reset airbag light. Remove steering wheel - Torx 50. Scratch a mark on nut wheel and column to make replacing it easy. Remove shroud 2 x phillips in front and 1 x 4mm allen underneath if I remember. The switch stalk are clamped around the steering column and loosened by a singl bolt. Its then a matter of wiggling them off and changing the appropriate stalk.

Your logic sounds fine - Only the Xenon plus on the facelift cars will have seperate flash and high beam wiring, and as per Mikes instructions its easy enough to swop over.
Unless you have Vagomc, I'd probably disconnect the battery when working with the steering wheel and airbag then it cant log any faults that will need clearing, otherwise its fairly straight forward....
