Default HPI - Worth the money??

Just noticed someone mention about throwing money away using HPI and it got me a thinking

Many years ago I treated myself to a motorbike and rang HPI to check that everything was OK with it - the bike was around 7 years old but in mint condition and the odometer was only showing 2.5K.

HPI said that everything was above board.

It wasn't - I found some old MOT certificates showing that it had done over 17K !!! (OK, when I phoned HPI to let them know, they sent a cheque).

So - buyer beware, even HPI and the like don't know all the facts

Anyone else had anything similar??

Yes, it is worth it. To make sure it hasn't been written off/stolen or have any outstanding finance on it. HPI isn't the be all and end all, you still need to be fairly shrewd and check the MOT history/service history and do all the usual mechanical checks yourself. You can also check the MOT history on-line.

I was ready to go to the bank and take cash with me, and drive it back, if all had been well,(but no mention on the ebay listing about it being a cat-D. I suppose at that price there had to be something not rght about it.I was once caught out years ago, i bought a car that was on finance, (once bitten twice shy)..

For the sake of 20 quid on a good few grand, definitely worth it as they're then liable if it does show as clocked, financed or written off.
