Default D2 boot strut replacement

As some of you may have seen, I got new boot struts (and ramps and a tool chest) from my brilliant wife for my birthday.

The site that I bought them from has a video of how to fit them, but it's not quite accurate as the struts they supplied are slightly different (and nicer IMHO).

So, as I never got the hang of posting text between photos, all the piccies are below (apologies for the quality - it's hard to hold the phone whist doing the work at the same time!).

The first 2 piccies show a grotty old and a shiny new strut!
To start, open the boot and prize off the upper retaining clip with a small screwdriver (piccies 3 and 4).
Pull off the top strut socket joint from the fixed ball (pic 5).
Repeat for the lower joint (pic 6).

The new struts have a different retaining clip; a fiddly little wire thing (pic 7). Remove these completely before fitting.
Push the bottom strut joint on first! You have to compress the strut slightly to get it to fit and this is very difficult if you fit the top joint first!
Once in place, you can push the retaining clip through the 2 holes in the socket joint and flip it around to lock it (piccies 7 & 8).

Compress the strut slightly (it's stiff!) and push on the top socket joint. Repeat clip fitting as above.

Note that the struts are not left and right handed, so one of the lower joints will be difficult to fit the retaining clip to because the holes are not very accessible. I removed the black plastic cover to the side of the strut on one side (last pic) to make this easier, and replaced it once the new strut was in place.

Stand back and admire your work!
