Default 1996 A8 4.2 PF - service - what parts are the best?

Hi guys,

I would like to do the full service on my recently purchased Audi A8 4.2, 1996 PF model.

I have seen that there is quite a variant of parts available - for example different types of spark plugs. Could you recommend the best ones?

What I would like to change is:

Oil - what would be the best for 4.2 engine with 116k miles on the clock? Do you know what is the quantity the engine takes?
Spark plugs - seen different types - any recommendations?
Brake pads - any feedback on those? Seen Brembo and Lucas, which is twice the price of the Brembo ones.

Cheers,
Tom

Here are my thoughts, hopefully someone else will chime in too with more advice.

Spark plugs - oem only (Bosch platinum +4) everyone reccomends staying with these.
Oil - I only use Castrol Edge 5W30, Oli is a oil expert and I think he said Castrol have really good aditives. My car uses no oil and its on 129k miles. 4.2 should take 7.2l. never use dino oil, only fully synthetic.
I stayed with Brembo pads, they seem good to me.
Change power steering fluid if its never been flushed.
Change fuel filter.
Flush brake fluid.
Change air filter, clean airbox thoroughly.

Thanks a lot!

Would you be able to tell me what are the quantities for brake and steering fluids? I do not have the manual available unfortunately

Also, is the rocker cover / valve cover gasket set readily available from lets say Eurocarparts? Need to change them as its leaking pretty badly.

So far I have:

Audi A8 1996 4.2 quattro service

Oil Castrol Edge 5W-30 8l 55.98
Spark Plugs Bosch HGR 7 KQC 8 31.68
Oil Filter UFI Oil Filter 1 7.14
Air Filter Hengst Air Filter 1 10.08
Polen Filter Hengst Pollen Filter 1 15.54
Brake Pads Front Pagid Brembo 1 33.54
Brake Pads Rear Pagid Lucas 1 17.7
PS Fluid
Brake Fluid

Total 171.66

I would keep away from Pagid brake pads as I had a case of new ones cracking (See http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/showthread.php?t=6505)

Stick with Brembo or Audi OEM pads. Use the link below to identify the right ones:

http://bremboaftermarket.com/It/Car_...ue_Search.aspx

nextdaybrakes.com were around £57 for the Brembos.

Yes, forgot the Pagid pads, and add the fuel filter on the list too.

Thanks for the info guys.

I was actually looking at brembo brake pads as the price in EuroCarParts is quite high for the front ones.

I was told by ebay seller of Brembo brake pads that Brembo model:
P 85 038 is for the Lucas Brake System
P 85 053 is for the Brembo Brake System

Apparently it can be identified by checking the mark on the caliper. Not sure which one is it, would need to check tonight, but if this is Lucas system then I would need: P 85 038.

This seller will have them available next week apparently.
nexdaybrakes do not have any in stock.

The build sticker identifies Brembo fit as "1ZL" . The Brembo pad number for the Front = P85 053 - as you have been informed.

On PF cars there was only Girling/Lucas(314mm or 323mm) front brakes, Teves(360mm) and Brembo(345mm) were available only from 12/1998.

Only difference on 1996 car would be either 314mm or 323mm discs.
Audi's brake pad numbers are different for 314mm and 323mm but I believe they are interchangeable.

Both the Lucas 314 & 323mm calipers look identical too, as i found out when i changed mine for a pair i recycled from an early S. I had to change the disc's too. Pads did indeed all look the same face to face size wise.

Thanks guys. Went through the old receipts and previously there were some discs purchased at GSF, part number: NBD713. It cross references with Ferodo DDF954 - which seems to be 314mm disc brake.

Ok, so it seems I have Lucas system, as I dont have PR:1ZL code on the sticker and as per ainarssems LUCAS was mounted on PF cars therefore I would need Brembo pads P 85 038 for the front and P 85 013 for the rear. I think...?
Although on the Brembo site they have brake pads for LUCAS and BREMBO systems for 314mm discs...
