I wonder if anyone has tried using the system from the VW Phaeton. The hard part (R&D) has been done already...hinges, pump, I believe hinges already include microswitches for limiters/position, trunk close switch...and those are some sexy aluminum hinges . There is a good chance it will fit with very little effort since Phaeton and D2's already share several systems. Add to the pluses: Audi/VW parts so replacement and diagnostics would be easier vs a custom make-shift system. Food for thought!

Looking at some pics of it, the Phaeton system has a lever off the bottom of the hinge which is driven by hydraulic rams.

I can't see how this all fits under the lid, so that implies the rams are inside the car That would mean an opening right in the place where the D2 collects leaves and mud. Unless of course the bodywork is quite different to the D2 and has space for all this stuff.

No electronics shown here, but I know in the beetle there are clip-on plastic pieces which contain hall sensors that detect the piston in the ram. That might be the case here - worth further investigation

Here we are looking at hydraulics when the B7 does it with a spring

Obviously this is open only, but a hell of a lot easier to achieve!

(Why can't we embed video? )

Tbh I'd be happy with this rather than the full auto system, but I may keep investigating out of engineering curiosity

Someone had posted a link to a YouTube video before of someone adding a spring to his Rover 75 to do this. I considered doing this, but don't have anywhere local to buy the parts, and would have to get them from eBay, but without knowing measurements, didn't bother. If anyone's interested, these are the videos:
