Does it grumble while moving, or while stationary as well? If moving it could be diff oil level. They are notorious for leaking out of the output flange seals, FWD versions even more so than quattro. The diff could be grumpy if it's low on oil.

If it grumbles while in drive but stationary then that could be the torque converter. Hard to tell without hearing it, and even then not easy to diagnose without taking it apart.
I only notice it whilst it's in neutral; doesn't do it in D and/or R...

My 4.2 had its first gearbox rebuild at circa 70k, that one went at circa 115k when the car was scrapped

It wasnt the gearbox, it was the waterpump

One owner further on..... its not the water pump either. It sounds like the PAS pump but pretty sure it’s actually due to the one way clutch on the alternator being seized solid. Pretty minor noises so I’m going to ignore it.
