towball 13 pin socket

as with many other 8's my car is fitted with a removable towball , presumably factory fitted because the wiring socket is audi branded

under normal circumstances no electrical problems , but in order to hook up to a trailer with the old standard 7 pin socket there is an adaptor supplied and here my problems begin ; plug in the adaptor in preparation for connecting the trailer electrics and , lo and behold , the indicators on the car now flash at at least double the required speed even with no trailer connected !
even stranger , if I turn on the 4 way flashers instead of the indicators the flashing is at the normal speed
