That looks more like chrome (or did you really polish it that well?), the D2 S8 ones are polished solid aluminium.

Honestly, I don't know if it was chrome or stainless steel to be honest, but it took me ages to clean them.
They were OEM petrol D3 tips

I've used oven cleaner to great effect, just don't get it on the paintwork!

On which exhausts, chrome or aluminium (which I have).
Paint isn't a problem, it's grey plastic nearby.

Aluminium exhaust? That's news to me. I am pretty sure tips on my PF D2 S8 OEM exhaust are stainless steel of some sort.

I thought the whole exhaust was stainless steel but the S8 tips were an aluminium unit. Certainly don't look or feel like stainless steel.
Edit: On second thoughts I must have been not paying attention, far too hard for aluminium and no surface that it gets without a coating.

I think I was getting confused with chromed steel, which they definitely are not. Looking again they must be stainless steel. Oven cleaner at the ready!

The tips dont oxidise like aluminium so I always thought they are stainless steel.

The exhaust itself is not exactly stainless steel, more like corrosion resistant steel which is kind of halfway between regular and stainless, many aftermarket exhausts that are similar material are advertised as stainless while they are not really. The tip seems to be proper stainless steel on S8.

I read that somewhere as well, most stock exhausts (D2 included) are some kind of treated steel, that's why it rusts after around 10 years. I'm not sure if its electro-plated with something or an actual corrosion resistant alloy.
A magnet test should confirm? if it sticks it is not stainless steel, if it doesn't stick it is stainless steel? Although saying that my kitchen utensils say rostfrei and magnets do stick to them. Only on one stainless steel frying pan they stick very weakly.
