I tried a fairly strong magnet, no attraction to any of the exhaust, well not the tips or the back box. Sticks like glue to my rusty Ford Focus though...

Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)

And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

Various grades of steel are used in exhaust systems. According to wiki, the steel grade generally used for exhaust sytems is:
"Type 409—cheapest type; used for automobile exhausts; ferritic (iron/chromium only)."
whilst "Type 439—ferritic grade, a higher grade version of 409 used for catalytic converter exhaust sections. Increased chromium for improved high temperature corrosion/oxidation resistance."

But as you may know there are 10's of differing grades of steel with differing properties and depending on the cost of a "stainless steel" system they could be using a number of types. Powerflow advertise that their exhaust "tips" are made from T-304. Double "S" uses three main types of stainless steel - Type 409 (Ferritic), Type 304 (Austenitic) and Type 316.

Hi I tried a couple of methods but below you'll find how I got the best results in this post 2 yrs ago...this is the method I'd recommend.

This weekend was the weekend to have another go and this time i used a few new toys...

Power drill
800 grit sandpaper on a wheel
Polishing mop with polishing soap bar (this stuff is amazing!)

Overall, quite pleased with the results and i've gotten the mirror finish that i've always wanted - although it did take about 2 1/2 hrs

Anyway, thought i'd share some of the results...

The exhaust seems to be full stainless the centre box is double skinned in a zintec or galvernised mild steel. The exhaust seem to be more damaged by heat the closer to the engine. Here is my 14 year old exhaust, the black paint of the rear box comes of very easy with cellulose thinners to reveal bright stainless.
Mmmm each bank has totally different path in the rear box ( very strange!) this may explain why each banks exhaust pipe has been affected by heat and corrosion differently.
