Default Nearside wing mirror - odd behaviour

The passenger wing mirror on my 2002 S8 has been acting up lately.

If I'm reversing with the control switch to the left, the dipped function seems to work OK but then it doesn't quite want to return back to the normal position.

Any ideas what cause this guys?

Mine used to do just that, until I changed the ally housings (it's an S8). I'm sure that the housings had nothing to do with it, but it was pretty mucky behind the mirror where all the moving parts are, so I cleaned it up a bit and gave them a squirt of WD40. I wonder if it was simply a bit of muck or lack of lubrication?

It's pretty easy to pop out the mirrors and have a look.

Similar experiences, way back.
Getting lubrication inside isn't easy, IIRC I actually took my mirror off to swap it (for a spare purchased from our sponsors) and found that once unmounted and upside down there was a good route in for WD40, which fixed it!

2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (A much rarer model than a D2 S8 by the way!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!
Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon, Auto-dim mirror, Leather, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

Thanks for tips guys.

I just replaced the glass on both sides and gave them a good clean but didn't think to "throw" some lube in there as well.

I should be off work tomorrow so might be a job for then.....I'll update accordingly!

Just a quick update regarding this as I managed to resolve this issue a while back.

Following the advice from The Laird and HP I removed the glass and applied WD40 liberally. After engaging reverse several times I noticed it was very slowly starting to return to its normally position after moving out of neutral. More WD40 and more reversing and it was soon moving freely like it should do.

I remember when I bought the car the wing mirror knob position was centred so I wonder if the lack of use meant that it just seized up over the years. It’s been well over a year and still working fine.
