Default No hot air!

I've got a FL 4.2 Q Sport. Slightly odd ventilation problem. No hot air.

Normally if I start the car from cold the fans won't start to blow warm air until the engine is producing warm air - then the vents will come to life and the fan speed picks up. As of last week though the fan speed stays resolutely on one bar, no matter what temp I select (with the exception of LO - then it blows a gale and won't stop blowing a gale until the engine is switched off and on again).

So, a flap - I guess - is staying closed and diverting hot air from the engine bay away from the cabin. The question is whether the motor that opens the flap is done in or whether a sensor in the cabin is done in.

Has anyone experienced anything similar, and if so, can they offer a ballpark cost to remedy?

TIA

Could be an easy fix, its the diag thats more tricky

Get someone with Vagcom in your area to run an output test on the HVAC unit, and then check for errors... That should get to the bottom of it fairly quickly...

I don't think it's flap. If it was flap fan would still be picking up speed just blowing cold or in wrong direction depending which flap. Can You adjust fan speed manually using?

Yes, I can adjust the fan speed manually, and no, the fan speed didn't change unless I did. So I tend to agree that that rules out a flap.

Anyway, further developments. We have had a slow leak somewhere in the engine coolant system. Last weekend the red thermometer appeared on the dash. I topped the coolant up and limped the car home. It's now at the garage, who've reported a leaking coolant pump. They also think that the lack of hot air could be related (they suggested an airlock somewhere) such that getting the engine coolant working might clear the AC/heating problem. I confess that I find this difficult to follow or understand.

Oh, and since it's almost due the cambelt service at 75000/80000/whatever miles, they've suggested that's rolled in too. It's all got a bit expensive all of a sudden. Expensive as in more than the value of the car expensive...

Most cars I had in my formative years, ie as a student, when the heater went off you knew it was time to fill/top up the rad!

It needs water circulating to heat the interior. Simples

Damn! That makes perfect sense.

Why did it think that the hot air was heated by letting it waft generally over the engine?
