Default MOT Time.................

Well it's that time of year and I know I will fail as I have a fair old judder on my drivers side front under braking and had several advisories last year for front and rear control arms.

Off to the MOT station and lo and behold it fails. can you tell from the photo what from?

Remember my advisories from last year? Nope it was none of those.

More help?

You won't get it!
None of my last year advisories figured in this MOT. I got a new advisory for one tyre close to limit which I knew. The failure? Inner CV gaiter passengers side!!!!!!!

So why is the suspension on the floor? It goes like this......
THE PLAN

Travel to my friends unit in deepest Cornwall, get MOT locally.
prepare to sort out brake issue and noisy front wheel bearing and do transmission fluid change and rear output shaft seal replacement. All parts ordered.

Get MOT and fail, plan change 1. Add in inner CV boot.
Get 8 on ramp have a look round underneath spot other inner CV boot fubar missed by MOT! Order second CV boot; commence removal of half shafts.
Once lower control arms disconnected find that last years advisories were spot on. 3 of 4 arms inner bushes are toast. order 4 new lower arms.
Move on to known brake problem and wheel bearing. O FFS Caliper is stuck on. Get first bolt out to find it has been cross threaded!! never mind helicoil will sort that! Second bolt will not budge. Destructive removal of caliper only solution. new hub carrier ordered from from A8Parts. Immediate dispatch (cheers guys) and 24 hour delivery.

Soooooo we need to transfer the top control arms. Pinch bolt seized. Nooooooo! Destructive removal of top arms destroys top arms. 4 new top arms please! . The 8 is still in bits on the lift awaiting a full set of Febi Bilsteins finest suspension components and a new hub carrier. Rear output seal replaces to find it's been done before and not well! All sorted now and done properly.
The transmission fluid wasn't to bad and the magnets were middling from what I have seen. My mechanic friend (ex navy engineer) says they were far better than many he's seen (specializes in old VWs).

For those that notice the cut in the hub carrier on the second photo. We had to cut the threaded section of the bolt to get it out. Turned out the lower hole that had the cross thread in was already helicoiled and the top one was complete seized probably due to cross threading and bi-metal corrosion!.

I'll update when we are finished.

From what I can see it is outer CV boot that failed and as far as I know only outers result in MOT failure as grease can get on brakes and affect brake performance/balance.

Oh damn, and I was gonna say it failed due to all those front suspension bits dropping off when you raised the car up on the ramp. . . .

Unfortunately all gaiters are now failures! In all I will change 2 inner's and 1 outer. One done for last years MOT. Not even looked at the rear yet!

I've got all this coming up on mine if i'm man enough to try keeping it on the road. I was just thinking how much simpler it would be if it all fell off as it were lifted.

Just thinking about it i replaced all the front arms not too long after getting the 8, with cheep ebay arms. They must have covered around 60k miles and are ready for replacing now. With the state of the roads around my parts i wouldn't think that was too bad really.

I still rate the Meyle HD arms I fitted on the top front of mine - once they'd bedded in the refinement is as good as oe for much less money
