Gearbox worry?!?!?!?
Hey guys,
Had a wee scan in this section to see if anyone had same issue but couldn't see anything! Car : 2002 A8 2.8V6 Quattro Sport............. I selected "R" and pressed the gas pedal before the gear was engaged, it made a small bang as it selected "R". When I changed from "R" to "D" all the gear symbols on the dash were lit up with the red box and the car seemed to be stuck in like a limp mode!!!!! I stopped, selected "P" and turned off the engine. When I re-started the car it was back to normal with only the selected gear lit up with the red box around it! After this its as if I can hear the gearbox selecting 1st but I'm not sure if its my paranoia!!!! So any advice or answers guys????? Its going into the garage on Monday for a health check so was thinking a gearbox service and oil change etc!!!! TIA.............. |

Sounds fine, as long as its behaving now I wouldnt worry. No gearbox autobox is going to like having a gear selected at above idle. You are I suspect having a little paranoia with regard to the noise into 1st given what had just happened.

Get hold of VAG-Com and do a scan of the autobox ecu, it will have recorded a fault when the lights all came on. I'm guessing a bit here, but just clear the fault and then enjoy driving the car. If anyone should be worrying about the auto box its me, at 181K miles without any maintenance. I gave up reading the horror stories, and just drive and enjoy the car.

Dam problem is still there, fine in drive but banging into reverse when selected causing all gear select symbols to be in red boxes! Hope it's not the ecu as above!
Where is the gearbox ecu as I hope it's not in the passenger side floor where my water leak is causing floodage! |

TCU is in the engine bay box next to the fan, so should be less liekly to flood, but could have some water in there.

ECU is in the (sealed waterproof) box under the bonnet - passenger side in front of bulkhead beside the air intake.
There are several in there; I think it's on top.

Sorry to say, but this sounds to me like one of those pesky O rings has gone, which sadly means the gearbox will either need stripping and refurbing, or a reconditioned exchange box.
If that is the case, definitely wouldn't do a fluid change, it won't make it any better, could make it worse, and will cost you about £300 for nothing |
