Second opinion wanted on transmission woes
After 14 month's respite from the previous gearbox troubles I had on my '97 4.2QS, they are back with a vengence. Struggled to get the car home in limp mode on Sunday evening as even the slightest gradient caused it to almost grind to a halt. Pressing the throttle resulted in no movement just over-revving, and the cogs won't change up to 4th/5th. The CAT light is also lit up permanently. I had the fluid/filter etc changed in June last year and this seemed to cure a similar problem back then. Could the same issue have returned after only a year? (< 20K miles since then). Or has my torque converter finally packed in? Difference this time is that the engine just revs in 3rd (I think) whereas last time it still went in to 4th/5th even in limp mode. Here are the codes :-
17118 P0734 Gear 4 - incorrect ratio 17119 P0735 Gear 5 - incorrect ratio 17114 P0730 Gear Ratio Control - incorrect ratio 17087 P0703 Torque converter/Brake Switch B Circuit - Malfunction Could a fault in the F125 switch generate the P0730 and P0703 codes? Any advice welcome - at my wits end with this gearbox and car's fate hangs in the balance as its going in for another fluid & filter change this Wednesday.......a real shame about the transmission on A8's as in all other respects they are fantastic cars. Must be dozens of otherwise sound cars scrapped each year just because Audi never recommended regular maintenance on these boxes.... |

I'd look at a rebuild.
You in Scotlandshire? Mackies in Glasgow are a proper ZF shop, or A4audi if you just want it looked at.

Yep Stirlingshire to be exact! I've been in touch with Mackies before on other matters but TBH I'm not in the market for a full re-build....if the fluid & filter change doesn't help, I fear its curtains for the old gal unless another (less expensive) solution is identified. Am willing to chance £200 on another fluid & filter swap but £1500 for a rebuild is not an option (more than the car's worth for a start). Even if I can get another 12 months out of her it would be worth it. For the moment I'm being optimistic, I'll find out the position in the next day or two. Fingers crosses but in the meantime I'm hoping for the best but fearing the worst!

Sad sad news,
IMO, if its hitting limp mode in 3rd, then fluid and filter change isnt going to do much, its a bit like changing the engine oil when the engine has already seized - fluid and filter is preventive maintenance, not a fix it solution...

Thanks yes you are probably right, will let you know how it goes anyway. The box was going in to limp when trying (and failing) to engage 4th gear. Last time it took a few days after the filter/fluid swap before the box returned to 'normal' (plus a further top up of 1 litre ATF). Think this time its more serious though.....but will keep you posted if Lazarus rises from the dead!

I think Ians right - as someone who has just changed his box it sounds like youve lost a clutch basket so youre not getting past 3rd gear. . . sorry to hear

Just a thought -any chance these symptoms and fault codes could be caused by a faulty F125 switch???

You mention 5th gear, and 1997 which makes this one of the 'deadly DTD' type gearboxes, the first of the 5 speed quattros.....
You dont mention your mileage, but if its anything like 125000 + then statistically its likely the box is dead. Any garage that takes your money for a fluid change at this point is just robbing you tbh....

Bad news.....
As feared the gearbox is toast. I've decided to cut my losses and call it a day, so if anyone is in the market for a 1997 4.2 QS (pre FL) with 149K on the clock for spares or repair I'm open to offers (collection only!!). Car is in excellent condition for year bar the knackered gearbox (pics available).
Gutted at this outcome but c'est la vie.....if someone is willing to either take on a project or spend £1500 on a gearbox overhaul then they will have themselves a great car. Otherwise its up for spares/breaking. |
