Default Mega Spec Audi S5 Coupe For Sale - £33K

Yes, that didn't last long, but then my cars never do, do they ?

This one, is actually a victim of its own success.

All was going swimmingly until we were away in Spain at xmas, with all the kids meaning we took the wifes 2006 Q7 away with us. The Q7 is great, loads of room, power, road presence and even has some of the must have toys for me like Adaptive cruise, and keyless.

But, its all the little things in the newer Audis that i ultimately missed. The Virtual cockpit display, the google integrated Sat nav, the super seamless media and audio experience, self parking, all round cameras, lane assist - the list goes on.

So, I decided that I'd bite the bullet and upgrade the S5 to a much newer Q7, with all the same tech and a little more.

I'm not really expecting any interest from here in it tbh, but as I never got round to reviewing it (and boy is it worthy of a top review) I can combine the two....

This was one of the original market launch cars built for the press, and this particular car was reviewed by Autocar magazine.

I could share lots of pretty photos of it for you, but they have done such an excellent job right here:

https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/audi/s5

So lets cover off some of the excellent bits about it:

Phone / Media integration.

Where do we start? Bluetooth A2DP of course, RSAP, of course. The optional Audi phone box with wireless QI compatible phone charging and signal booster for non-rSap phones. Integration with the Audi MMI Phone app to provide direct access to streaming music services. 2 USB ports. 2 x SDXC memory slots. 1 x media drive for Cd/DVD etc. The Audi phone box also allows 2 phones to be paired over bluetooth at the same time, saving the 'his and hers who gets in first gets paired' problem.... From factory comes with 3 years of Audi Connect, which means it has its own internal SIM paid for by Audi. This is used for the MMI app car status and location services, google mapping etc. You will have to provide your own data connection to use the Wifi hot spot though, or upgrade the Audi Connect package to allow it.

Engine / Gearbox

This engine is simply amazing. A 3.0 V6 turbo petrol and its chalk and cheese to the old shape S5. 0-60 is quoted at 4.7 seconds and it feels really very brisk and has a wonderful exhaust note to match the performance, but calm it down and cruise on the motorway and 35+ mpg is yours for the taking. The 55 litre tank regularly gets over 400 miles on a long run, which is staggering for this much performance on tap.

The gearbox is an 8 speed unit, and is utterly creamy smooth. The handbook claims driving in Sport is more likely to make the gear changes noticeable, but I can't say its something I've seen personally.

Keyless

Works exactly as you'd expect, with the awesome bonus of being able to open the boot handsfree by kicking underneath the rear bumper. Works very well, especially when your hands are full.

Navigation

Brilliant. All driven in realtime by googlemaps. Never, ever had such trouble free navigation. It starts with a vague-as-like navigation entry by letter entry, finger tip writing on the pad, or verbally, which Google online will turn into something useful and provide three routes for. Want to see close up position map, and a larger overview ? - No problem. Put the overview on the main MMI screen, and the 3D position view on the cockpit display. Then you still have the heads up display giving you turn by turn and the optional voice guidance... You really can't get lost. As a great bonus, if you follow the same route to work every day it will start checking the route for you automatically when you get in the car, and update you on traffic jams, without even been told to navigate you there.....

Parking

Yes, this has the self parking feature. Press a button, use the indicator to signal which side you're attempting to park at and it will measure the gaps between the cars until it finds one it can squeeze into. It will ask you to go into reverse and it will steer for you perfectly as you ease it back in.

But, thats not really the best part. For me, its the 360 degree cameras. Front and back, and both sides you get a realtime overhead view of the car and car see quite clearly the kerb you're parking up against, or the object you're backing up towards. Its the first parking system where im more inclined to trust the screen, than the door mirrors.

Parking forwards? It'll figure out that you're manoeuvring into somewhere and switch the PDC on automatically for you

Massage seats

Because it has them, and they work pretty well. A lot like the D4 A8, its far more than a simple lumbar shuffle on your lower back, and is configurable for 3 different massages at 3 different intensities.

Adaptive cruise with traffic sign recognition

Into what I'd call 3rd generation now. Using windscreen camera, radar and PDC like the D4, the system is hard to fault. You can optionally have it adjust the adaptive cruise in realtime to changes to speed based on speed restrictions it sees and I'm not going to claim perfection, but 99% of the time its spot on. Makes the miles and miles of 'smart' motorways quite tolerable when you don't have to concentrate too hard. It won't undertake cars in outer lanes, and starts to slow down gently towards motorway exits you need to take, or towards roundabouts etc if you're on other roads.

Lane Assist / Side Assist / Traffic Jam Assist

Lane assist will steer the car when the windscreen camera can clearly make out the sides of the road. Well maintained white lines, or a solidly defined pavement usually does it. Virtually faultless on motorways in my experience. It will steer very accurately, but does insist there is some resistance on the wheel - If you remove for more than about 10 seconds it will complain at you. A caveat to this is Traffic Jam assist which works below 37mph in slower traffic where the Lane Assist is more tolerant of steering by itself.

Matrix Headlights

These are to Xenons, what Xenons are to Halogens. Audi did a feature called High beam assist (standard on the non-Matrix S5) which turns the main beam on or off depending on whether it would blind anybody in front etc. Matrix headlights are made out of several dozens separate LED lights which are turned on or off to avoid blinding people directly in front, or oncoming traffic, but without turning off any more main beam than absolutely necessary. You can basically drive around with main beam on permanently...... and in case you're wondering how effective it is, I've never been flashed once with it on, versus numerous occasions I've been flashed on standard dipped xenons.... The other bonus with Matrix headlights it the sweeping indicators that you're getting used to seeing on the back of modern Audis - Well, they're on the front too....

Drive Select / Dynamic suspension

Probably my favourite bit. Drive select lets you select a comfort / auto or dynamic setting for various components - Engine, Steering, Suspension, Sports diff, engine sound. Then within those settings, depending on whether you're in [D]rive or [S]port/Manual it behaves a bit more so of what you've selected..... So if you have it all set to Auto, and you're pootling along in [D]rive its all quite comfortable and sedate, but pop the gearbox into Sport mode and the suspension tightens instantly, the engine note gets louder, the throttle more responsive etc etc. It really is as good at motorway cruising as it is on the B roads.

Interior Lights

Definitely worth a mention - Like many newer Audis the interior lights are both touch sensitive, and dimmable..... Tap on the light to turn it on, but instead if you press on it and hold it down it comes on, then starts to dim down to your preferred brightness. What a nice touch (pardon the pun)

This is the best, most practical fun daily driver I've had I think. You'll all appreciate that the Yorkshireman in me isn't used to buying all this new Audi tin, so keeping this and the new Q7 just isn't an option sadly.

It has both keys, handbooks, full service history (serviced 4 months ago, not need for another 18 months or so now), balance of Audi warranty etc etc.

Any questions, please ask

The whole thing is witchcraft in all honesty.... The best bit about it though, my some margin, is the engine. I will always have the C6 RS6 V10 engine up there as a favourite just because of the sheer brutality of it, combined with ridiculous reliability all things considered, and whilst the 4.2 Tdi V8 from the A8/Q7 was always a firm favourite, I have to say that this V6 Turbo takes my 2nd place all time favourite engine.

I haven't driven a new RS4/RS5 yet, which is based on the same engine I believe but with even more power, but even the concept of that I find boggling brilliant as this is already flippin quick for a compact lump....

Good point, totally missed that ! - Its a whisker over 18K on the clock....

And yes - The photos on here are from Autocar. Its currently on Autotrader with real photos:

S5 on Autotrader

Before I bought this I found an 8T RS5 with every option. On paper, looked amazing, but was really quite dull and dated to drive in contrast.....
