Another black-and-white example of why nobody should ever, ever, not ever (did I say ever?) consider using a main dealer for the 'oil change'

Get it to a proper transmission specialist for a gearbox //// service ////

Hopefully, not too much damage done as it sounds like you haven't driven far, but running short on oil causes the gearbox to 'cavitate' which is where the pump is pushing air, not oil through it, and it can lead to deteriation of the box.... Thats what causes the noise. Transmission fluid expands as it warms, hence once warmed up the symptoms lessen, or even stop as the shortage (by volume) is no longer as severe....

Of course, an expert would know all of this - Audi do not.

The Daily Town Car - 2023 Tesla Model Y Performance. Black with Black. Giant ipad screen, huge sunroof, 4 wheel drive, Tow bar, lots of ooomph and made in China, so actually built properly unlike the Californian ones.

Black, 7 Seats, Towbar, Homelink, Enhanced Auto pilot with Summon and self park, Heated front seats, CCS Charger upgrade, MCU2 Upgrade, Falconwing Doors, Self opening / closing doors, Netflix, Spotify, toys, Air suspension, alcantara roof + lots of other stuff......

The 17 year old Driver Wagon 2015 Skoda Citigo Monte Carlo. Alloys, Power steering, Aircon, Leccy windows, Sat Nav, bluetooth, central locking, cup holders, 59 whole bhp. Million times better than my first car. Well jealous.....

Had a bit of a chat with the service manager.

In their favour:

1. They were honest. They fessed up that they'd screwed up and didn't try a cover up.

2. They put it right and didn't charge me any extra. It would have been interesting if they'd asked me to pay for the extra ATF.

3. I now have an S8 with what seems to be a warrantied box. They put a note on the cars' file to the effect that they may have damaged the car and if the 'box fails, they'll fix it.

Not in their favour:

Plainly can't be relied upon to work on their own cars. Ouch!

All a bit sad really. I'm pi$$ed off at myself for trusting them despite reading on here that they are NOT to be trusted with the gearbox.

I'm pi$$ed off with them for potentially Fecking my car up, especially as I was trying to accomplish some preventative maintenance!

In fact, I'm angry at them.

Well at least they were honest. Not come across that before. There are good stealers out there, but not many.

I would now drive the car like you stole it to build confidence in the box and if it goes south get the AA to take it directly to the stealers.

O and go see Andy at A4Audi you'll love the cost difference.

In fact is there any way to frame Simon's post on the Stealer explaining what a bunch of plonkers they were?

However, Simon A8Parts forum is glad it has helped you and you have had a result.

Every day a school day.

I've learned some stuff here and I hope I've helped to pass it on too, which presumably is what the A8 parts forum is all about.

Thanks to all you chaps who posted on here in the most genuine and helpful manner.

My car is purring like a kitten.

I am, on the other hand, quite mightily pi$$ed off.

My letter to Audi will be sent later on today. I'll be looking for a 100% refund of the labour at the very least.

Edit to add: Conan! Correctamundo! Your post #2 was right on the money.

I'm impressed. :-)

Update.

Audi Glasgow have offered to refund the cost (price?) of the gearbox 'work' including the ATF that I gave them. £165+ VAT.

Such a shame that the great company that designs, builds and plans the maintenance, of such fantastic cars is let down, in the UK at least, by these muppets.

The 'Vorsprung durch Technik' boys would strangle them!
