So I decided to go with Meyle HD parts for the front suspension overhaul, which I bought (new) from our sponsors a couple of months ago.

Prestige were able to source a D2 Meyle HD kit for me and substitute the correct rear lower arms for my FE (20inch factory-fit wheels). Unfortunately, when my garage started to fit the parts today, it seems that the front lower arms don't fit (they tell me the ball-joint taper is smaller than on the old arms)

These are the part numbers of the Meyle parts that Prestige supplied:

2 x 116 060 0006 - Stabiliser Links
2 x 116 020 0008/HD - Tie Rod Ends
2 x 116 050 0031/HD - Front Lower Arms
2 x 116 050 8239/HD - Front Upper Arms
1 x 116 050 8292/HD - Rear Upper Arm (Left)
1 x 116 050 8293/HD - Rear Upper Arm (Right)

1x 116 050 0139/HD - Rear Lower Arm (Left)
1x 116 050 0140/HD - Rear Lower Arm (Right)

For reference, these are the alternative rear lower arms for non-20" wheel cars I believe (not supplied):

1x 116 050 8299/HD - Rear Lower Arm (Left)
1x 116 050 8300/HD - Rear Lower Arm (Right)

So presumably the front lower arms (116 050 0031/HD) should also have been substituted with arms that are unique to the FE?

I've dropped Prestige an email this evening. I'm hoping they can source the correct arms and replace them. Does anyone have the part number of the correct Meyle HD arms?

This was the kit I received. The incorrect arms are labelled #9 in the kit:

You need the lower front arms for a PF car with steel uprights. The 20" uses steel uprights and has the same size balljoint taper. The arm for the B5 A4 and PF C5 A6 also translates to the same number.

Thanks very much MJ

I have to say I'm a bit disappointed that Prestige didn't know that. They're usually so knowledgable about these cars. The main reason I asked them to supply the kit was to reduce the chance of any mistakes, knowing that some parts were FE-specific.

No doubt Prestige will be able to supply the correct arms but I've had to tell the garage to put the car back together with the old lower-front arms for now (because they need the ramp) so they're going have to strip the suspension down again at a later date.

Credit where it's due, Carl (at Prestige) quickly rectified the mistake by sourcing the correct arms and posting them out to me

I now have what appear to be the correct arms but unfortunately my car had to be put back together with the old (lower front) arms. Luckily however, those arms weren't too worn and all the clunks, rattles and tramlining problems seem to have gone

Examining the rest of the old arms, it seems that the main culprit was the rear upper arm ball-joints. The was no noticeable play in any of the ball-joints when they were on the car but, now that they're off the car, the rear upper arm ball-joints are noticeably looser. I wonder if that's a common failure or if the (OE) rear upper arms in this case were just substandard?

These are the part numbers for the Meyle HD rear upper arms I now have:
116 050 8292/HD - Rear Upper Arm (Left)
116 050 8293/HD - Rear Upper Arm (Right)

And (I think) these are the OE part numbers for the rear upper arms:
4D0 407 509 J - Rear Upper Arm (Left)
4D0 407 510 J - Rear Upper Arm (Right)

So for future reference, the Meyle HD Control Arm Kit part number is: 116 050 0041/HD, which includes the following arms (plus all the required nuts, bolts, etc):

2 x 116 060 0006 - Stabiliser Links
2 x 116 020 0008/HD - Tie Rod Ends
2 x 116 050 8239/HD - Front Upper Arms
1 x 116 050 8292/HD - Rear Upper Arm (Left)
1 x 116 050 8293/HD - Rear Upper Arm (Right)

The kit also comes with the following lower arms which are for the non-20" wheel cars
1 x 116 050 8299/HD - Rear Lower Arm (Left)
1 x 116 050 8300/HD - Rear Lower Arm (Right)
2 x 116 050 0031/HD - Front Lower Arms

For 20" wheel cars (FE), the lower arms need to be substituted with these:
1 x 116 050 0139/HD - Rear Lower Arm (Left)
1 x 116 050 0140/HD - Rear Lower Arm (Right)
2 x 116 050 8228/HD - Front Lower Arms

On OE arms usually the rubber wears out before the ball joint. Upper rear is the prime culprit, then lower rear. Upper front rarely have any obvious wear, lower front can take a lot of pounding before they show any signs. Usually the tie rod end ball joints will go before the control arms do.

Cheap aftermarket arms are a different matter entirely - the balljoints rattle on those if you sneeze too hard.

I think I read on Meyle's site that the balls in their HD range are larger than stock so should last even longer - more surface area = less pressure. Mine have been on for three years now but only done 15K so too early to tell what wears first.

Encouraging to know

My last front suspension overhaul lasted less than 2 years (and probably only 5-10K miles) before the looseness and rattling returned, supposedly all OE parts too. Although I have my doubts about the rear upper arms. Examining the old ones more closely, I can't see any Audi/VAG part numbers.
