Sports mode and 6th gear.
I'm convinced, really really, sure that when I had my 2003 plate 4.2 D2 that if you put it into sports mode on the gear selector, and then attempted to change gear with the paddles on the steering wheel, that it only showed gears 1 to 5.
I'm also convinced this was the case with my recent B7 S4. You put it into sport, and it forgets about 6th gear. Not unreasonable i guess if you're being really sporty. But - My new D3, a 2006 3.0 Tdi definitely does not lose 6th gear when you put it into sports mode. This is really very good, as in Drive its a bit too sluggish for my preference, but wouldnt want to drive in Sport all the time if it was never going to use 6th. I'm 99% sure I tested this on Richards new 4.0 and it didnt lose 6th either. So, Is this an age thing - Or a petrol / Diesel thing ? Can those D3 owners out there with flappy paddles please test and report back for my sanity please?

My A7 shows 7 gears in both D and S mode and 7 in Manual mode when you switch to it or when you over-ride D or S with the flappy paddles

My D3 S8 can still change up to 6th in S mode. It just chooses to ignore it for most of the time

So, it could be newer cars then that have 6th available in sport.....
