Default S8 - Fluid Change or NOT?

Forum

A little dilemma - All the AUTO Boxes i have had I always had the Fluid Filter and Gasket changed and even the connectors on the Merc.

However I wanted mine done at Audi for the S8 5.2 V10, and they tell me that the BOX is sealed for life! and they do not offer this service.

I wanted experience and thoughts and whether i should do it? and any recommendations on Tranny specialists?

Nik

What's the mileage and age of the car?

I'm amazed they won't do it when specifically asked - that's nuts!

Find a local ZF transmission specialist and I'm sure they can do it - there are a couple of methods depending on kit availability - and on my d2 s8 it did improve the shift quality and reduce time to take up drive going from D to R or back

I dont know about the ZF 6HP26 gearbox which I believe what is in the V10 but have a look at other threads on this forum (mainly about the D2 box). There is also a statement from ZF whcih I cant put my hand on at the mo' about sealed for life v service intervals. I'll find it in due course.

The key message from that statement is:

"ZF has promoted lifetime service for many 5HP and 6HP factory filled transmissions. Lifetime is not clearly defined and each OEM manufacture has there own philosophy. ZF stands behind lifetime recommendation where listed in the vehicle operator’s manual. ZF engineered and tested our fluids to retain its characteristics through normal lifetime operating conditions.

However, a spirited driving style, special environmental considerations and other individual driving factors may place higher than normal loads on transmission fluids. To assure proper operation it is advisable to perform a drain and fill at 100,000km/62,000 miles or eight years
."

The assumption is that it SHOULD be changed.

Thank you for the response - so I have booked her in at VMTP next Thursday - to get the Filter, Fluid and gasket changed - cheap insurance I guess - even at 46K on the clock!

do they have a fancy fluid removal system or just remove the pan and filter and drain what they can?

Mine had the latter done and was fine but it does leave about a litre of oil in the torque converter, so I'm working on doing about 3 years and changing it again.
