Default 2006 model and AMI

A question for the gathered A8 Jedi,

Went to my main dealer a while ago to ask about getting the AMI fitted to my late 2006 model. The result was that they said my car was not compatible with AMI! I was very surprised as it's got MMI High, Sat Nav, bluetooth phone and glove box CD player. AMI is offered as an after market install on the Audi UK website and my car is not omitted.

Are there any expert who would know why this would be the case? I don't have an '06 brochure to see if it was a factory fit option.

As an aside; my warranty recently expired and on the day before I went to them complaining about some bugs in the sat nav interface (with video evidence!) about it not accepting names properly if you had been there before and that the button for going to the destination page said 'Map'.

Anyway, long story short, it came back with a fully upgraded MMI! This included the 3D maps option on a 2006 disc.

If you don't ask, you don't get.

They're erm.. what's the word..

Oh yes.. Wrong.

If you have the latest MMI (5150 or 5570) then you can drop MMI in (I think it needed 3120 as a minimum).

You have 2 options.

1 - Easiest - Just replace the CD Changer with the AMI unit. Keep the CD Changer so you can perform updates if any ever come along (what I did)

2 - Bit more fiddly, but not too bad - Keep both and replace the pigeon hole in the glovebox beside the CD changer with the AMI. Needs soem new wiring/fibre components and the MMI told that it has another media unit, but still perfectly doable.

Thanks chaps,

I'll have at them. Normally had a very good relationship with my Audi dealer. Was very surprised with their original answer and your replies confirm it! They gave me some banter about hardware not being compatible, but I can't see them going back from '03 to '06.

Now then, I know this is probably water off a ducks back for you, but is this a job an "Audi specialist" would be able to do or is is best to go to the dealers?

Fiddling with the fibre network sounds like a shortcut to a broken car! Unless it's simply a matter of plugging sockets in.

Thanks again for your help,

CBA

Mostly a matter of just plugging cables in..

Depending on where you are in the country, Craigy @ tclsatnav.com is a good guy to go to as Audi can be really funny about it.

If you just want to do the swap out (as I did), then Kufatec.de sell the unit on its own.
