Default Local Traditions

Moving on from another thread, we seen Lawnmower racing and Black Pudding throwing to knock as many Yorkshire puds as possible.
Could the 2 be combined to form a super sport or could we create a super sport from local traditions

What other odd customs happen around the country or even globally?

In my area there are a few.

We've seen the Lawn mower racing around the streets of Barnstaple MOWER RACE
Shebbear have Devil's Stone. No Videos
Ottery St Mary have Tar Barrel race TAR BARREL RACE
Padstow or Padstein as it is known locally now, have The Oss OSS LINKY

Oh i can't forget the Torrington Cavalier's for their outstanding Bonfires and the money they have raised for charity. This years Trumpton was amazing and the run up to the burning down open for visitors, it's the first time my kids had seen Trumpton. LINKY

So instantly i'm thinking, Running to your lawn mower with a flaming tar barrel on your back a few laps and a stop for knocking some Yorkshire puddings off using some Black pudding and scoring some bonus points a few more laps and........ what have we got out there?

Great thread idea

I think one of the craziest has to be Gloucestershire's cheese-rolling races:

Actually, having now watched that flaming tar barrel race video, I think that wins first prize for the craziest local tradition

I love how the guy being interviewed dismisses the dangers explaining: "if one of the children gets a little burned, at the time obviously there's a little bit of a fuss" .... but "when they go back to school they've got their little battle scars they like to show".

We're still eating our young down here mate so a little charring won't matter.

Some idiot in the crowd threw an aerosol can in the barrel as the guys run past to make it explode. As if it's not dangerous enough. "me throw can in barrel cos it is well funny" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-Y0q4n7Qhk

Jeeez. That could've been so much worse. Lucky nobody was seriously injured.

The comments on some of these clips are more entertaining than the clips themselves ...

It's great isn't it. Now spelling can be an issue when you have you're own language going on. Things are just not spelled as they are spoken and a lot of words i grew up with don't exist in normal English. I have uploaded an extract from a dictionary.

Witch hunts,....... NO! what have you heard?
Quite fittingly the last witches executed in England was in Bideford.
It could well be me being hunted down after this post.

Yeah, but that was weeks ago

Actually, despite the distance, there's a lot of similarities between our areas it seems. Not far from here, the famous Pendle witches trials took place (though that was a few years ago of course).

And that Devonshire dialect dictionary is very similar to numerous Lancashire dialect 'dictionaries' I've seen, which usually contain phases such as 'gerrit thee sen' (get it yourself).

Here, this will help you to spe'k proper, like wot we do:
