My Dad always dreamt of building a model railway in a large shed, but never realised it - he needed a lot of room as he did model 1/2" to the foot for some strange reason!
Ray, please realise what my Dad didn't!

Half inch to the foot? That's big. When we first moved into this house I planned a large tramway in the garden but kids happened so it became a "Dad didn't".
When we realised that the kids were finally leaving without the yo-yo effect I started to think of an 00 layout but was talked out of that by a friend who has an N gauge American layout. Another German speaking Ray, one year older than me. So now I have collected a few N locos and rolling stock. Even built 20 grain hopper wagons. All British outline. I'm going DCC but not happy with the Guagemaster controller so I am planning on building all my own electronics. I'll have to practice my soldering skills because a lot of SMDs to solder. I could do it once upon a time so let's see how I cope.

Ooh... N gauge is a bit small.
But miniaturisation of electronics and bigger brands adding finer details has made them a lot more practical.

HO/OO always seemed the most practical for in-house or small garden shed/garage layouts to me.

O gauge for the more committed modeller.

My Dad used to build O-gauge trams in England. In Australia he found there was no interest in his stuff and he lost interest in it. The 1/2" stuff all started when a mate of his built a Victorian (State and era!) logging layout for an exhibition. All the logging railways run by the Forestry Commission in Victoria in the late 19th/early 20th century used the same narrow gauge as the Victorian Railways at 2'6".
This was the late 70's when HOn hadn't been thought of, and with plenty of O-gauge stuff around, they decided to model using O-gauge track as 2'6", and the scale became half inch to the foot!

Dad helped build the layout for the exhibition with his new friends (one of whom became life-long) and bought all the gear from them when it was finished and spent the rest of his life building scratch built models of all sorts of weird and wonderful stuff from around the world, so long as it was narrow gauge (anything from 2' to 3'6").

This chap lives in the same village I was brought up in, close to the Great Central on the northern outskirts of Leicester, so this model is extremely familiar from my youthful trainspotting days.

We also used to cycle a couple of miles East to the LMS (St Pancras) main line which was busier.

2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (A much rarer model than a D2 S8 by the way!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!
Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon, Auto-dim mirror, Leather, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

Which village was that? I’ve lived in Leicestershire on and off since the mid 60s

Birstall. Thought we chatted about that a few years back? Can't recall where you lived though.

I’m sure we probably did - but my memory was rubbish even when I was young!

Before we went up to Scotland, I was in Stoneygate, Beeby, Barkby, Thrussington and Burton Lazars. And, as a kid (primary school age), I lived in Wigston.
