In that case yes, it will need a gearbox specialist, but chances are they will insist on a full refurb rather than just a repair.

Well if you're able to invest in it then Mackie's in Glasgow is the forum favourite, but its a £3K+ job which is probably a bit of an unpleasant shock after just 2 weeks. It does come with a warranty though, and will add value to the car (not that that matters if you're keeping it).

I will say that from personal experience of a fair number of 'rebuilt' gearboxes from various places around the country, Mackies and Chester autos are the only places I would trust with this job.

The alternative is to wait for a good used unit to come up but thats fairly unpredictable or course, and that too would fail eventually.

also, did ALL UK D2's have the ZF 5hp 24A gearbox?

The 4.2 had the 5HP24a. The 3.7 and 2.8 had the 5HP19FL.

Yours will be code FBG.

1996 4.2 A8SQ - Ming Blue. 178k on a cambelt! Trader's 8. Delivered to A8Parts at Lifex.
2003 2.8 A8SQ - powder blueish. Fill in for a while. Sold on.
1998 1.8T A4 Avant FWD. Ming Blue (there's a theme here), PEX for the 97 S8.
And a list of non VAG going back 40 years before I saw the light.

P0733 gear 3 incorrect ratio
P0730 gear ratio monitoring

as mentioned before, the car selects reverse without issues...
