Missing a picture? Rear diffs are the same design between 5hp19 and 5hp24.
Gearbox... Why do people feel the need to sandblast these things?  The end user is never going to see it, so why waste time trying to make it look 'new'? The end result is always that the steel parts just go rusty so it looks worse than ever  At least the pan is clean inside. This will go off to get powdercoated. Nice and clean inside, albeit the wrong colour I've filled the sump plug / fill tower with evaporust to clean this area up before it gets sandblasted, since trying to blast in here will be very difficult Left to drain overnight. I won't be able to get all the red atf out, but I'll get enough On to stripping the engine. Talking of stripping, the first thermostat bolt stripped as soon as I touched it  Luckily an M6 spline hammered in to it cracked it loose. These will all be replaced anyway This engine is remarkably dry, which is nice. A little weep from the usual upper gaskets, but nothing from the crank or sump. Most stuff removed. I'll flip it over and get the manifold and sump off tomorrow Each time I pass the converter I give a few pumps on the oil extractor, to get as much of the red atf out of this as I can too

The gearbox sump needs powdercoating before, so I wrapped it up in cardboard and pallet wrap to stop schmutz getting in. Kersteman garage would probably just put this back in the car and send it
Cardboard down ready for cleaning the engine Removed the oil cooler. The pipe was broken of course - split around both o-ring grooves After cleaning the front of the engine I wrapped the crank sprocket bolt in blue roll and soaked it in Evaporust to clean it up as bit as it was quite rusty. This worked perfectly, but I didn't get an after pic The sprocket isn't coming off as the seal is fine so no reason to disturb it. This is a very dry engine really. Flip it over to drop the manifold off underneath so no grit goes down the inlet ports, and then pop the sump off This is pretty crusty so will also go for powder-coat Oh hello. Why is a piece of the cam chain tensioner in the sump?  Not bank1... (quite clean inside given the mileage) Bank2 upper pad - broken in to about 4 pieces. That's quite a close call! It wouldn't have taken much more running for it to spit this remaining chunk out completely and be running metal on metal. A few chunks loose in the head Bottom end cleaned up. 2003 D2 FL S8. Irish Green Pearl/Beige. Solar sunroof, auto-dim mirrors, electric rear seat functions, ski hatch retrofit; extended leather. Aftermarket DVB-T, reversing camera and full XCarlink (Bluetooth etc.). 2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation".  (A much rarer model than a D2 S8 by the way!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!  Finally: gone, but not forgotten..... 1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors. e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon, Auto-dim mirror, Leather, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer. And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

FFS. I posted this in the Big Red thread without realising but was tipped off by Strum so I moved the post to this one. Apparently the forum deleted the images when I deleted the post from the other thread. I'll update it later with tonight's progress.

Not much done tonight. My shop vac died a while back and its remarkably difficult to clean this mess up without it. Managed it eventually, by which time I'd had enough and came home

Right, back on this (again) after a bit of a wait for powdercoating due to a backlog and continued difficulty sourcing parts.
Cleaned up in here I popped the oil pump screen off just to check there were no bits of chain tensioner stuck in it - one tiny piece so thats fine. Sealant round the flange Sump back on. I put new bolts on this time since the old ones are properly crusty. The sump looks a bit crunchy in this pic because of the light - actually its just some surface pitting where the rust was blasted off. Metal oil cooler pipe One day I will manage to stick a sump on without catching the sealant before it sets. That day is not today Replaced the oil pressure sensor as a precaution The old thermostat housing was such a mess I just replaced it with a good one. Put to bed for the evening since the cam covers are off. Cam chain tensioners tomorrow
