But in addition to that there's a little (aerial splitter?) box between the Tuner and aerials and I never did work out what that does, there are lots of versions depending what you have installed and they're usually hidden behind the rear seat back on the nearside.

Oh hang on, you're right, I was going from memory there, I just popped out to the garage for another look. Looks like the tv part of this system is a mine field, aftermarket seems the way to go. Sorry for being a bit dumb but what does the t-era part that you linked to do?

Takes standard CVBS/Audio input and feeds via a lead to the back of the RNS-D.
Seems to be automatically recognised so if you select TV on the RNS you see/hear whatever video/audio input is going into the box.

Also has a button to allow video-in-motion, though I've never tried that (didn't bother wiring it in).

Read the description on the product page, it explains what it does.

2003 D2 FL S8. Irish Green Pearl/Beige. Solar sunroof, auto-dim mirrors, electric rear seat functions, ski hatch retrofit; extended leather. Aftermarket DVB-T, reversing camera and full XCarlink (Bluetooth etc.).
2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (A much rarer model than a D2 S8 by the way!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!
Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon, Auto-dim mirror, Leather, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

Ah yes, I think I get it but correct me if I'm wrong... if I get an aftermarket digital tuner, I can connect it to RNS-D head unit via the ter-a unit? Am I on the right track? I'm still very new to all this so I just need to get my head around what I need and don't need.

Yes, though I think there are similar devices from other suppliers, that one just did what I want.

Ok, well that's something for me to go on then, I may as well forget about the analogue tuner then and go aftermarket with the tv side of things. Thanks for all your help on this, it's very much appreciated.

Why not use the AV1 or AV2 input and attached a digital tuner to that input?
