You should rephrase that to ''they are a known weak point on just about every car brand out there'' as ZF make racks for BMW, Merc, Porsche, Peugeot etc.. the list goes on..

And yet they don't fail so frequently on some others.

We'll agree to disagree.

Thanks for all the feedback chaps.

Though could anyway confirm the correct part number for the standard power steering rack (1N1, Non Servotronic) ?

Just seen this and sorry to hear about it.

The inner track rod ends were replaced shortly before you got the car so won't need done whilst in there.

Ah useful to know about the inner track rod ends.

She is an old car so a rack to go at 178k is nothing really to complain about, I am just sourcing a rack at the moment and it will be replaced shortly.

The car is old and the new estate I live on has not been tarmacked yet so its a bad surface that's finally pushed it over the edge. The passenger side track rod has a little play in it now but that will be down to the rack piston just beginning to fail, not much movement but I can rotate it a little by hand hence the knock on broken surfaces.

Also the boot on the other side it getting a little leaky now.

Though as we all know on this forum you cannot have a D2 S8 and not have it kept in perfect working order!

The owner of my old D2 made it to 199K on the original rack, then one of the seals went which resulted in PAS fluid leaking everywhere. The failure was rather sudden, one day it was fine and then towards the end of a longish drive it failed. IIRC the old D2 is now being used for parts to fix another broken one because it was just not economic to repair it given the mileage etc.
