Default Number plate fixings

My (embossed metal) number plates are both secured by the double-sided sticky foam pads, which I’m not too fond of!

The front number plate, because its curved, frequently pops off at one end or the other, and I had cause to remove one end of the rear one recently (to get at the little hole that I drilled for emergency boot opening), which put a slight bend in the number plate, and it now refuses to stick back (even with a new sticky pad).

The pre-drilled (and tapped) holes at the rear are too large for the yellow and black plastic bolts that I got from Halford’s and I’m not sure if there are holes for the front plate.

Has anyone found a good solution - you must have done!

Hi Jim, my front plate (plastic) is held on my four screws, one at each corner.
That way it bends to the curve of the holder.
The screws have coloured caps, two white and two blue (for the Euro flag section).
Can't honestly recall if they're self-tapping or what.....

Rear plate uses two standard black plastic bolts which happen to coincide with black sections of the plate.....
Maybe I was lucky finding some of the correct thread, it was so long ago.....

I have a whole collection of spares picture now attached. You can see the original Audi metal bolts in the collection, they needed rather large domed covers.
Probably bought those plastic ones online, maybe M6 thread, not sure........ (Something like this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Yellow-Bl...2/373039266833 )

Thanks for this. I’ll have a closer look, as the bolts seem very similar to the ones that I have already

How about a plate holder? They screw to the bumper / boot and then the plate just clips in to them so a good mechanical fixing with no visible screws. I've got an Auto Union set for my S8 as I have the same problem with the front plate popping off.

This sort of thing:

You can get them with all sorts of different logos, or just blank or even with chrome surrounds, whatever takes your fancy

Do you have pre-drilled holes on the front bumper?

IIRC, I’ve tried something like this before, but the lower face went all faded and looked naff. But I’m prepared to try again. This solution would allow me to access the ‘magic hole’ for emergency boot access without wrecking the number plate

No idea what holes are in the front bumper tbh as my plates are still stuck on (sort of) the same as yours. Its a job to get round to once the Murple is done.

The holders don't last forever, but you can treat the plastic the same as you would rubber or plastic trim which extends its life considerably. Plus they are cheap. Buy two sets that you like and keep one in a cupboard for use in a few years when the first set fades

Double sided sticky tape/pads always work for me, never been problem with it coming off. Someone (3M I think) does VHB (very high bond) tape/pads. And if this is not enough there are kits with clear primer/adhesion promoter for plastic surfaces. I have a magnetic phone holder stuck to dashboard with about 1 inch diameter pad and that holds fine for over year even fairly heavy 228g rugged phone just fine.

I seem to remember Sergey getting hold of some curved front number plates from Germany that were specially curved to suit the D2 bumper but cant seem to find the thread whilst on the phone not sure if anyone can locate it?
