I like to play devil's advocate in these situations

I'm car shopping in Croydon on Saturday morning - should be interesting!

Default Mackie's transmission work - detailed

As requested (if a little bit slow…), here's the key details

Price (gulp!…) £2490+VAT - i.e £2988 gross. Sadly, they don't give A8 forum members a discount (we've tried... )

For that, they completely recondition the gearbox, replace any parts which are faulty/not performing to spec, including fitting an upgraded torque converter.

The warranty is 36 months or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first, and that was what swung it for me, ultimately, along with their reputation.

There's also a chargeable Warranty service at 12 months/12000 miles, which costs £155 (as quoted by David s8).

I've been very happy with the performance since this was done, though I've only done about 8k miles since it was refurbished just over a year ago, and would recommend them, if you can bear the cost of it. Hope this helps.

I had exactly this problem on my D2 S8 just over a year ago. The trouble is I live in Dubai and quality repairs of this nature are difficult to find. There is a ZF agent out hear but I have heard horror stories about them. I had it rebuilt by a 'specialist' for the equivalent of 1500 quid but it is certainly not right. Clunky and slow changes. I would go for quality repairs every time. You may think some repair shops in the UK are poor but some of the cowboys out here make the cowboys in the UK look like good, honest professionals. Good luck.

Default The time has come...

I've taken the decision not to get the gearbox done at Alliance Automatics in Croydon, based mainly on the fact that they simply didn't seem interested? I went down there last week to check the place out and saw mainly ambulances and police cars/vans there. When I went today, I was told simply that they 'won't be doing it' to which I replied 'What, this week?' - their answer left me speechless. The 12th of never, possibly a job that they simply couldn't be arsed with.

Suffice to say, I turned on my heels and walked out without even saying anything. Voting with your feet always yields some satisfaction. I went back to the garage that tend to my Audi's needs and they recommended KSM Automatics near to where I live. Car is booked in for Friday for a week's stay. The chaps knew all about the venerable 5HP24A and even had one there on the bench for me to inspect. He particularly liked my comment about the Hampton Court maze description of part of the gearbox, whatever that bit's called - I'm sure someone will step in and explain the voodoo magic part I'm talking about.

In essence, the A8L should be back on the road again in a couple of weeks.

Default Project 'Gearbox Rebuild' nearing completion

Further to my last post, you may recall that I elected to get my gearbox rebuilt by KSM in Carshalton. A chance conversation with a chap who lives next door to my beloved god-daughter in Horley resulted in us discussing my new steed, also known as a VW Bora which the garage have kindly lent me. He'd assumed that this was a 'new' car for me which put my nose out of joint somewhat so I indignantly replied that this was only temporary and the quattro gearbox had died a death on me, and that why he hadn't seen my Audi recently. Anyroadup, long story short etc. but he then recommended 'this place in Carshalton' and that his mate comes all the way down from Cheshunt, Herts to get his gearbox rebuilt and swears by their excellent knowledge and service. It turned out that they are one and the same garage, which was good to hear.

On the subject of the rebuild, my hub/drum had ripped the top lip/edge part of the metal about 1/3 of the circumference. He advised me that the crown wheel surfaces were slightly rough but should be OK for a while yet. That part alone would have been £600 or so from ZF. I needed a replacement driver's side engine mount because the one on the car looked as though it had been 'looked at' shall we say. One of the bolt threads was stripped, and the other one had been 'heli-coiled' so I ordered another one from the forum sponsors - nice work Carl!

Gearbox is all out and in bits on what I called their post-mortem bench. Thousands of O-ring/seals and clutch bands and other voodoo magic parts. Exhaust is off the car, along with the starter motor and other bits. It afforded me the rare opportunity to see those blinkin' drains either side of the gearbox as well as the ability to see where everything goes with regard to the rear silencer and drive/prop shaft. I spent about an hour there asking loads of questions and taking pictures.

I will attach the photos with basic titles/descriptions.

Having recently been on an open day at Mackies in Glasgow I can fully relate to your voodoo magic comments, pretty scary when you see one of these boxes stripped down, glad to see its getting there

Could this be the elusive "gearbox specialist in/near the M25" that we've not found before? Fingers crossed.

Smile Inside the M25, a dark place indeed LOL

I will reserve judgement until my first woof/squirt in the reborn A8L and boy, am I looking forward to that moment. My left leg's muscle mass seems to have increased its girth since driving the manual VW Bora but it is from the VAG stable so all pretty well put together.

The chaps at the garage seem very knowledgeable and border on the anal - his comment about the crown wheel rough surface seemed a bit excessive at the time - but upon physically touching the surface, you knew he was on the ball. Not really anything visible to the naked eye but attention to detail is important. Gearbox casing was 'washed' so it stops all the grunt from getting everywhere. I was very impressed with that part because I thought I'd got a new gearbox casing if I'm honest.

He'd had the misfortune of having to rebuild an R8's box in the last month or so and willingly admitted it was a 'bit of a ****' (rhymes with twit) which made me laugh, but then I felt happier that mine was simply labelled more of a pain in the backside rather than a nightmare. The guarantee was only 12,000 miles or 1 year but my inner senses tell me that I won't be going back there apart from a transmission fluid change in a couple of years time. Hopefully. If all is well that ends well, I will certainly be giving these chaps the thumbs up from me. If other people do consider using KSM for gearbox rebuilds, then I'll be happy to have simply started the ball rolling, so to speak. Looking forward to the end of the week for some V8 luxury...
