it won't run for long if you run out of oil, or crash into that thing you couldn't see through the dirty windscreen!

But yeah, point taken, but really, it's not that much of an inconvenience, mine tells me 1000 miles in advance of the top up being needed, am sure Audis do similar

they should, however my mates one just decides not to work, been in loads of times, i hear they are having some real issues with it though it sounds more like the sensors or module not getting the right info and refusing to start rather than an actual adblu problem itself

For high average miles users then AdBlue is indeed a minor inconvenience. For low miles drivers who don't 'need' a diesel it's just another expense and something else to go wrong. Modern diesels are very complex.

Seems there's a lot of A5 diesel owners who weren't even aware of SCR/AdBlue when they ordered their cars new! Based on the number on A5OC that post about refilling.

Friends got charged £150 by VW to refill their Sharan.....

Wow!

I was looking over some Jags in the local showroom recently and noticed a small filler cap accessible with the boot open on one car. Sales guy explained that was for topping up the Adblue - it did have a blue cap!

He did say it was pretty cheap, didn't use much and was a DIY job if not picked up at a service.
Given that franchised garages charge you for topping up screenwash you can guarantee they will pick up on Adblue.

Yes, Jaguar do diesels now!

http://www.gsfcarparts.com/982aa4200
and it is £12 click-and-collect at the weekend - Adblue wouldn't put me off as it has been around years now on some makes, it seems one of the less troublesome new tech things.

I've seen dealers charge £150 for changing a pair of wipers, it's not AdBlue's fault the dealer ripped her off.

Because of the tech it achieves Euro 6 emissions, on paper at least, the road tax is only £180 per year, would you rather pay £500 plus and not have the AdBlue cost?

My specialist charged me £20 labour the first time and told me to DIY it next time as its really no harder than topping up screen wash, other than wearing goggles and gloves.

I won't keep it long enough for reliability to become a major headache, but neither have I heard any stories of AdBlue causing any problems.

If you want a modern diesel it's likely unavoidable, just enjoy the ride and worry less.

I agree AdBlue is a good thing for cleaning up diesel emissions - my point is that unless you're doing the miles that justify the CO2 saving of the fuel there's little point having the additional complexity

A Euro 4 diesel is no cleaner than a Euro 6 at engine out - all the improvement in tailpipe emissions is due to aftertreatment systems

Mines got the ad blu system so far nearly 6k miles no issues or fill ups. I post when i get the warning lamp on (probably kiss of death now)
I wasnt aware of it till i bought the car as it wasnt mentioned in the brochures etc. So i read up on it, as always you only tend to get the problem cases mentioned not the thousands of motors running it without issues.
Doesn't appear to be a big deal and you can get the stuff and top it up yourself, just don't spill on the paint.
As for the diesel and petrol argument i looked at both and its more down to personal choice, mine was a no brainer after trying both petrol and diesel. Also there are very few petrol V8 around to get a decent deal or spec on.
Only the S8 would show it a clean pair of heels and in day to day motoring it's economical and goes like a proverbial bat of of hell on the black juice so it works for me. i'm still loving mine every time i press the start button she is an absolute beast and a proper wolf in sheeps clothing imo
Cheers
Glyn
