Default WITW - Andrew's Irish Green

Next up, as most of you have figured out, is Andrew's Irish Green Pearl S8 I picked it up the other day, hence why Andrew has Big Red on his driveway, and it has been sitting on the driveway with my S8 while I sorted out some stuff in the workshop.

Before taking it apart, it also went to see a few specialists for jobs I'll be farming out. I was working to a very tight timescale to get it finished before the annual meet, and while that pressure is relieved now, I still have things booked in after it, so I still need to get a move on.

The first job was a door ding which was fixed on Monday by Dean of Dentcure, then it went to see Fix Auto in Crediton who are going to paint the bonnet as it has some rather unsightly lacquer peel. Next up was David Knight of Knight Detailing in Cullompton who is going to sort out the interior, and finally to Nicola of Fiftyfive Details who is going to get the paintwork looking sharp again

Fix are painting the bonnet while the engine is out. People seem slightly bemused when I take them only the part I want them to deal with, rather than the whole car, but that just seems logical to me. No point having it sitting in a bodyshop for a week while I could be working on the engine, but as a D2 bonnet won't fit inside anything I own, I made a bespoke roof rack for the Allroad so I can bolt the bonnet to it using the hinge points and catches. That way I can bring it back without having to run a strap over fresh paint.

I'll try and get some better photos when it comes back.

The interior then came out before it went on to the lift. David is equally puzzled by me simply taking him the interior, but happy to stick it all in the corner of his workshop and work on it between other jobs. The driver's seat is going to the UK Detailing Academy for recolouring, as they can scan the original leather and mix Colourlock products to suit. Luckily, they already know me, so won't be at all surprised when I turn up with a loose seat in the boot

Its the first time one has been partially dismantled before it even gets in the door No time to waste though.

Sitting on foam pads to reverse in to the workshop

I'll start removing the drivetrain tomorrow

Genius idea... but then we wouldn't expect anything less.

Its £500, for a strip and re-paint of the outer surface, leaving the inside alone and masking at the edges.

Having spoken to a number of people about lacquer issues, I've not found anyone who will repair lacquer peel as professionals don't want to risk an unnaceptable outcome. The biggest problem it seems is preparing the old base coat to take new lacquer. You can't sand it as you risk going through to the primer or at best significantly changing the appearance on metallics, and with no lacquer it is oxidising so won't take new lacquer properly. Everyone I've spoken to says it will leave a noticeable patch where the repair is, an edge where the new lacquer blends with the old, and stands a very high chance of failing again, and therefore they will only re-paint rather than try to repair.

Today was a total loss due to migraine so no progress on the car.

I know a few guys in one of the city's that you could use for the stripping down, they could strip the complete car down to the bare shell in a couple of hours ,the only thing you'd have to be careful of would be that they didn't accidentally load your parts into one of there export containers with there other car parts

Oh no, not another one! I hadn’t realised that you suffered from this until quite recently.

Hope this isn’t another long one.

I think we should refrain from giving MJ, chocolates, coffee and sticky buns....

Got the front end off today without too much fuss.

The only bits which fought back are the two lower bolts of the radiator air guides, but those are simple enough to drill the heads off.

Front panel off

Overall this one is in very good condition, which is a pleasant surprise after the struggles with the murple and barnfind. Both subframes have some surface rust but are entirely sound which is a bonus.

The bonnet is back from paint and they have made a very nice job of it

This is how the special roof rack works - the catches are removed and replaced with some M8 threaded bar which attaches to the right hand side of the rack

and the left hand side of the rack attaches to the hinge holes.

The bonnet is solid on here without touching the fresh paint

mmm fresh paint The PF is looking after the bonnet at the moment as I'm rather enjoying working in the engine bay with the bonnet off.

On with engine removal. In keeping with the generally cooperative nature of the car so far, only two screws on the electronics box are seized. One can be recovered, and this rusty one will be replaced

Its been a little damp in here but all the connectors are fine

I think this is the first one I've encountered where the original snub mount is still intact

Everything disconnected on the top of the engine
