Well I have decided I cannot lose the CD changer, and don't really want to delay installing the AMI. So I have ordered a 3rd party P&P cable set from eBay, and will use that at the weekend if the Audi set does not arrive.

I'll sell on whatever one I have not used (assuming I end up with 2 sets in the end).

The attached image is of the 3rd party cable, I cannot tell if the appropriate pins on the power loom are connected. Perhaps someone can work it out.

Well, I still maintain that I've never had an issue in the dozen plus AMI's I've installed, but the wiring diagram does show a ground loop between pins 1 and 4 on the AMI connector, but not the CD changer side.

This suggests it has a purpose, but it would also suggest that earlier cars would have an issue and they weren't prewired for this, and/or would suggest that you shouldn't be able to simply swap out the Cd changer and pop in an AMI which I know Richard did twice on pre-AMI cars without issue.....

So, maybe everytime I've installed it, I've used a retrofit cable and unknown to me they have included a loop through...

Still, suck it and see. Statistically, theres a good a chance it will work. and worst case, you need to create a 2nd ground connection...

I have looked closely at your picture after enlarging it and there does not appear to be a connection to pin 4 on either plug.
Can only suggest that you try it. As IT says it will most likely work but if not you at least will know the problem, maybe

+1 as Ray stated. That cable is wired with 3 pins on both AMI and CD plugs.

I had that 3 pin cable and everything worked as it should. No problems with AMI or CD.

It wasn't until I was playing with VCDS that I discovered AMI & CD were both 0E-Media Player 1. Take a look at the video in my old post and you can see the components cycle.

http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/showpost....3&postcount=18

Adding the extra pin on the AMI with make it 1E-Media Player II. This is the correct way it should be wired.

Ah I see now.

So, I can confirm my Y cable here has only 3 pins connected, and also that as far as I'm aware I've never needed to go into AMI or CD changer in VCDS ever, so will never have noticed this behaviour....

Interesting..... Presumably the grounding of pin 4 is purely to alter the ID it shows up with over the kline then... But as all the audio functionality goes via the MOST bus, it all works regardless...

Yeah, that's my thinking also. It's like a hardware jumper. The coding in the CAN-Gateway has options for 4 media players. So I guess if another PIN was used you could make the AMI Media Player 3 or 4

Correctly all the audio does go through the MOST loop. This a Master / Slave network and at initialisation the master gives all the salve modules an address so will work regardless.

The third party cables turned up today, so this evening I have fitted the AMI using these cables.

All seems to be working, but I have not yet done the pin 4 alteration. Hopefully by the weekend I should have the official Audi power cable, so I'll swap the one supplied with this kit for the proper one. The third party power cable was a right pain to install, its just a couple of inches to short to route easily.

Excellent work Manny

Can you check their Media Player position with VCDS? I'm interested if they share the same, like what I had.

Yes it's the same, when you scan Mediaplayer 1 it alternates between the CD Changer and the AMI Unit.

Another observation (keeping in mind i've made no coding changes). Looking at the installation list in the CAN Gateway, Mediaplayer 1 (0E) is no longer ticked, instead Mediaplayer 2 (1E) is ticked and a fault code scan shows that the gateway cannot communicate with mediaplayer 2, and that the control unit is incorrectly coded. However if you mediaplayer 2 you get nothing, but scanning mediaplayer 1 you get both alternating.
