Wet & dry paintwork renovation
It's not an Audi but paint is paint so I thought I would share this with you
Below is my old S-Class that was repainted under MB warranty by Evans Halshaw (MB Glasgow & Evans Halshaw are all part of the Pendragon Group) and the finish was rougher than a badger's ar5e. I spent a few days with wet & dry, Farecla G3 and G10, Grade A Polish and Autoglym HD wax After I had done the sides I decided to tackle the bonnet, my mate thought I had lost the plot taking wet & dry to the bonnet but the MB repair was so bad I had to do something and I couldn't make it much worse than it was This was a reflection shot taken a year before the bonnet was repainted and after the repaint the paintwork was flat and dull So let the rejuvenation begin

So when are going to finish it?
Only kidding, it's something I would like done to mine but don't have the balls to wet sand sand it. Hats off to you.

Judging by the state of the drive and garage, that was done some time ago, John

And you're still the master!
The day you start taking commissions, please put me top of the list (but preferably before I retire and move south).

Definitely not the master. Wet sanding isn't something I take on lightly, it could go horribly wrong and cost a lot to put right if it does but in the case of the Mercedes the paint was already in a bad way. I contacted MB Glasgow about it and was told to take it back, but if they can't get it right first time I doubt very much they will on the second attempt. The annoying thing was I spoke at great lengths with E.H. about the work and my expectations and they still turned out terrible paint job which a blind person wouldn't miss. The roughcast on my house was smoother

I'll never forget that session you held a couple of years or so ago, when we turned up with a bonnet from a scrap yard that was absolutely wrecked.
By the time you'd finished, we had to take it outside to photograph as all we could get was the reflection of the beams in your garage roof! David, Brian and I shared the purchase of a proper polished after that, but I've never achieved anything like your results. Sometimes I think it's because I'm too timid - a scrap bonnet is one thing; my beloved S8 is another! I'm sure that Brian will find the thread of the bonnet restoration (he seems to be able to find his way around the forum better than most!).

Takes a lot of balls to get stuck into the paintwork with sandpaper, especially if it's your pride and joy. My A8 has some marks on the bonnet that I would love to remove but I really don't want to go too deep on the paint so they will stay there.
Here's the thread for the meet, that was a fun day almost 4 years ago... Click

Amazing work that John, I wouldn't have the nerve or the knowledge to ever attempt something like that. I'll stick to mild polishing for now until I gain some confidence

That is some serious commitment and dedication to the cause!
Out of interest, what sort of paint depth readings were you seeing to give you the confidence to take the wet and dry to MB paint? Have you ever tried the Scholl range of products on orange peel? I have to keep going back to look again at those pics! |
