And there was me thinking that she would be kept in an air tight glass fronted cabinet.

The car that is, not MJ.

I seem to have mislaid a bunch of photos, but the rear suspension and brakes now look much like the front, the sill is re-painted, and everything is back together ready for the MoT this afternoon.

She keeps throwing me curve-balls though. While doing a final check for the test I noticed she didn't have a battery clamp. Simple enough to throw in a spare, except it wouldn't fit, because the battery wouldn't seat properly...

Here's the engine bay all finished, with 90% of my hard work now covered up

160 hours.

Wow!
That looks factory fresh but to go with it is the knowledge that everything that can't be seen has also had the same treatment.
I feel rather privileged.

Has the battery compartment been modified in some way? Or is it a non-standard shape to the battery? I don't recall noticing an issue with the battery but then again, I never had the battery out (I just disconnected it a few times to do certain things).

Interesting mix of ephemera in the bottom of the battery tray! I found a long-lost plastic trim clip when I pulled the battery out of mine, but no nails lol

I'm more worried about the colour, it looks like it was filled up sometime to a significant depth with rusty water!

Never had my current battery out, but when I replaced the battery on my previous S8 it was all clean and tidy down there.

I replaced mine recently and there was a small pool of water and a rather old elastic band, all cleaned up prior to new battery going in There was a strange thin brown wire not connected to anything too, probably some aftermarket thing since removed...

I don't like the look of those nails, would be worse if it wasn't for the protective battery tray.

The thin brown wire goes to the covering plate to "earth" it (anti-static I presume).

The water probably gets in via the rear offside roof drain which is just above the front leading edge of the battery box. The rust comes from the nuts, screws washers and bolts. Just what the nails are doing in there goodness knows! If the car was fitted with a heated front screen, I would suspect that someone was trying to "upgrade" the FB fuse associated with that system in the cubby hole above .

Dean, its normal shape - just full of detritus which stopped the battery seating properly. Chances are the water has been coming in through the missing grommets for the boot lid cables, which will be fixed shortly. It may also be one of the sunroof drains come adrift so I'll pop that side trim out and check everything is ship-shape.
