Default Great MOD: RS6 4F gear knob

I know, I know sometimes you are dreaming of RS6. Only sometimes though.

Well, you'll be pleased to know RS6 4F grear knob can be installed on A8 D2. With slight modification of course, but it will sit perfectly. New knob feels very good at hand and button is very smooth too. It's very high quality knob.

Pictures:

Procedure:

1. Go to ebay and search for "RS6 4F gear knob". Someone from Germany sells brand new gear knobs for 100 GBP. You need the one for RHD car. You can buy this part from dealer, but I don't know the part number. Price should be about the same.

2. Remove existing knob: Slide the sleeve below the handle that covers the stick itself down about 5-10 mm. Pull the selector button out (but without excessive force). Lift up the handle off the stick. It sits tight, so just lift it firmly. Once done, it'll be 100% clear what to do next.

3. Modify bottom of the RS6 knob. You need to cut off black plastic flaps from the bottom and remove other unnecessary ledges. I actually used a sharp knive and a small file. Make sure sleeve sits tightly. It is very easy to do job. Takes 40 minutes. Just wrap the knob with masking tape, leaving only the bottom part. I use 3M masking tape and it is excellent.

Ask me questions if you need more clarifications.

Just in case you want to take a look at old gear knob which now resides in 'for sale' section. Pictures may come handy when you pull the sleeve down.

Two part numbers are available for RHD cars:

1. 8P2 713 141 C QBZ -- perforated leather. My knob.

This is RS6-only knob.

2. 8P2 713 141 C SKH -- non-perforated leather. Used on RS6 cars with heated steering wheel (PR code 2ZD). I don't think there's heating element in this knob, since price difference isn't noticeable. It is actually cheaper. Most probably they just wanted to match style of heated steering wheel, as heated steering wheels are made of non-perforated leather. Picture of LHD car with non-perforated knob is here:

http://forums.audiworld.com/showthread.php?t=2790851

This knob is actually used in the following cars: Audi A3, S3, A6, S6, RS6 and Q7

Anyone know if there are colour options? Lovely mod, but not in a beige interior perhaps?
