If it does turn out to be the oil cooler plastic pipe does anyone know the part number for the metal replacement?

£250 is quite good value for that job. The seals are available - the single 'figure of 8' one is 077115441, about £6. Or, 077198405 for all of them in the oil cooler for £18.

The original plastic pipe is 077117411A, plus a couple of o-rings 077121437. They come in the set above too. As noted, most people choose to replace the plastic pipe with a metal version.

The posh alloy version from America is here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Aluminum-A...-/252303903426

I got a brass one from Poland for half the price: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Billet-Oil...-/121804628586

Obviously the German aftermarket option is a different type of plastic.

Good find.
Given that this is a problem waiting to happen, and the amount of other stuff I already have "just in case", I've just ordered one to keep ready should I need it.
The car can probably cope with extra weight of brass.....

I had my plastic oil cooler pipe replaced (preventively) a few months ago with the Aluminium pipe. Interestingly though, the original plastic pipe showed no signs of imminent failure despite 115K miles on the clock.

I made a drawing of the aluminium part before it was fitted, which I posted to this thread, in case you have a lathe and the necessary skills and time

Ok update from the garage..

It was a mission of a job, the small pipe was actually intact, but the seals to the oil cooler where the pipe goes in weren’t in great condition

We have renewed the pipe and all the gaskets just to be on the safe side. the technician was concerned the actual oil cooler may be leaking but we have pressurised it up and it appears to be OK

It’s been on road test and is all OK, before it was pouring out when pressurized up.

Car now back & all sorted, sadly didn't have the time to order a metal replacement pipe and wait to get it on in time, but i suppose the good news the old pipe had not failed, new pipe and new seals fitted all round on the oil cooler should be like new again ++
