View Full Version : Advice on fitting a short number plate to the D4 front grill

So I have a 5 digit number plate which is not as wide as a standard UK plate but is completely legal, and marked as such. Problem is that if I stick it to the existing front number plate holder it will look silly as the holder is naturally far wider than the plate.

Has anyone got a solution they could recommend? I was thinking perhaps one of the following:

a) fix the plate to the grille (somehow) without using the existing holder
b) modify the width of the existing holder to accommodate a smaller number plate.
c) try and find an overseas genuine Audi number plate holder for the A8 (contacted Audi and no help, looked on ebay etc and nothing other than square holders for the US market).

Many of us have such plates (e.g. S8 XXX) but just get them made to standard dimensions. ;)

Not fitted here, but I recently bought a front blanking plate which gets rid of the formed slot for a standard sized UK plate. I got a chopped down one just to make the car stand out really. Can be swapped in just a couple of minutes by 4 screws under the piece of trim so I just keep it in the boot and use a number plate with sticky reusable gel on the back.

Similar bits of trim are available for the D4 to fix to the one-piece grille but I'd bet they are on back order from Germany if you get one through an Audi dealer. US plate size which seems to be a bit taller, but for example...

Someone I know cut a piece out of the holder on their RS6 and re-joined the end bits

Thanks guys for your help and the detailed replies. I think I may have a go at cutting down the existing number plate holder. I’ll post a photo here if it works out as planned. LOL

I know it's an old thread but I've simply removed the plate holder and stuck the registration on with 3m double sided tape. Works a treat, is very secure and looks great.
