Hi

I'm looking to buy a D2 S8. Could you please help me with the following questions:

1. Is the service schedule 18K miles or 2 years?
2. When should the timing belt service be carried out? Is it either mileage or certain number of years? What should be changed at this service? Roughly how much should it cost via Audi and independant garage?
3. When should the gearbox be serviced and what is involved with this?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

1. Service interval for minor service(oil service) is 10k miles or 12 months whichever comes first. For the cars after 2000 there is optional longlife service which is 20k miles or 2 years whichever comes first. Don't know if it there is anything else in it apart from using longlife oil. I suppose You can use longlife service for pre 2000 cars it's just that it was introduced in 2000 with new oils.

2. Every 80k miles. It only gives mileage for V8 engines but says 80k or 5 years whichever comes first for V6. Replace toothed belt, rollers, tensioner, water pump, poly-V belt also recommend to replace thermostat on 40V engines as toothed belt have to come off to get access to it. On 32v it is accessible with belt on so You can leave it but is only around £7 so might as well replace it. Coolant has to be drained so replace that as well unless it has been changed recently. Normally done together with regular service so plus anything that needs to be done on that depending on mileage and time. Don't know costs as I do all the job myself but I would say £500-600 at the independent and £750-800 at the Audi.

3.According to Audi it is filled for life and does not need servicing. Recommended would be 20K, involves draining old oil, removing sump, changing oil strainer(filter), reassemble and fill with new oil preferably using proper equipment flushing remaining old oil from the system. Should cost around £200 at auto box specialist.

I'd say belt change would be more than that - I had a mate do my V6 A6 and that came to £600 at mate's rates - that included £450 in parts. Audi quoted £1200 which didn't include the water pump or thermostat change that are highly recommended to do.

Just checked the paperwork for my S8, which had a belt before I bought it, and it came to £820 but they did not change coolant or water pump, or thermostat in that price

I'd say if you buy any D2 that hasn't had the t/belt done already, then get it done, along with thermostat, water pump, tensioner, rollers and stuff just in case.

I paid £591.20 for a cambelt, waterpump, thermostat and service with Ben in Daventry that was of course with all genuine Audi parts and correct locking tool too.

Thanks for the replies folks. One of the cars I'm looking at has allegedly had the timing belt done but there is no documentation to say so. Will need to factor this in if I go and look at it and make an offer.
