Sorry to hear your tales of woe Bill. But given the price of 8s at the moment it would be silly not to replace like for like. You know you want to! ;)

Are Imprezzas four pots? I know they are quick but who wants to hear a four pot noise in their 'performance car' I'd never buy one for that reason alone, give me a less powerful smoother and nice sounding V8 anyday. Reliable ? Yes but chavy too. Stick to the 8 Bill and are you coming to the meet in Warwickshire on the 4,5th June? +++

I loved my imprezas, all of them, but I'd never have another one. i've owned an 8 now, I and I know that an impreza would be a very unrewarding everyday driver, even though it can play hard on the occasional bit of fun stuff...

Stick with the 8, you know it makes sense... +++

my advice would be fill the coolant reservoir with k - seal.....works a treat....then just drive her till she dies......

then just sell on for spare repairs.....

but if u can do a bit of diy....then i would do the head gasket and cambelt....cos you might find that when you do that then the gearbox sorts itself out.....

gearbox wise i would just give the maf and the gearbox nose (little sensor sticking into the plastic pipe connecting the airbox to the throttle body) a clean and get an oil change, oh and give ur abs sensors a clean.....the gearbox uses these sensor to work effectively and they always get dirty.....

the above shouldnt put u back too much possibly 600 quid.....

and then you are laughing for another couple of years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Love your man maths Bill, and your approach can't be faulted.
Your good lady is another matter. She's either been seduced by the sight and sound of Imprezzas flitting through forest, or she knows some knave with one, who in their jealousy of your superior motor have been trying to 'turn' her.
Or, she's testing you

I'd go for the latter, she can't be that bad a judge of a good thing, after all she got you (could be on sticky ground with that argument).
Prove her judgement right again and go for the 8.
Class v crass

(I quite like the Imprezzas, tried to get my wife to have one, but she chose a Forrester 2L turbo. Same engine but way less power and not chavvy. Sadly its wedded to the most god awful auto box)
(Recently been bringing RS4's to her attention. She likes their estate practicality ) it may work ;)

new box at 75k and it's been there for a while. Nice man didn't vomit when I said that I'd open with an offer of 3k so if I were to punt mine out in the classifieds....

I got head gaskets, bolts, intake manifold gaskets and valve cover gaskets for around £250 including postage from Germany a little more then Year ago, all Victor Reinz stuff, don't remember the site and I have deleted invoice e-mails but probably could find it again. And camshaft seals from eurocarparts around £4 a piece.

I think the time that has been around, its age, and the way prices have dropped you could probably do even better than £3k Bill,

Reckon that's probably not worth much more than 3k.

Ah Ha, that car was used in criminal activity. Notoriety value alone is £250!

Bill, that car has been on sale for at least a year, not keen on them alloys at all. The car was on TV though!! Got a few texts saying 'your cars on TV'. Was used as a getaway car, fairly good coverage of her too.
Ian posted a much nicer S8 PF not long ago in a lighter blue with very good spec for less with genuine wheels and is what I would go for, if not a facelift.

As Amar says, the Sellyoak car was used in an episode of Hustle.

Well, It can be fixed for less than I thought and will carry on anyway for quite a while with no real issues, it's just that it has reminded me that with a 14 year old car one is always anticipating a major bill. I think I'll try and get shot of it now, next week is half term so into gumtree with it. Wife has taken pity on me and released 2k plus what I can get for mine so anywhere between 3-4k is my budget.

What do you reckon, offer a cheeky 2 1/2 for the selly oak one?

Bill

Worth a go, and tell him he can keep the wheels :o

Wheels are a little "gangsta" for my tastes so they'd be ebayed.

I've decided to flog mine. On closer inspection the water pump is the leak, hence the lack of mayonaisse and is being replaced as I type. With it's fresh tyres and wheels (tastefull d3 dished 10spoke 18's) new brakes, new rear calipers and thick service history it should be quite saleable at the right price. Wifey has smiled upon me so even though I could live with the car for quite a while I'm not going to pass up the chance of getting an S. Budget stands at 3-4k so if you find one that isn't silver do feel free to plonk a linky here. I have half term to go car hunting. I may be a two '8 household briefly :).
