I got it bruh. I watched it on my mobile, was too small to see the license tag. Just got home and watched it on a 42" Sony Bravia, shows more detail.

What engine was in the Beemer? Diesel power?

Poor Guy, it's worth pointing out in the video that it isn't just a BMW estate but infact a 335D, a standard one too. Guy's lucky it wasn't mapped or the new triple turbo 3.0 D BMW are bringing out with four wheel drive!

my power was way down but as you say if they p**s all over an S8 any way then i was not really up against a fair fight, not as we were at GTI international and as far as im aware BMW are not part of the Audi group and as mike mentioned it was all the more embarrassing that they let it down the strip, was the only beemer i seen there all day and in my opinion did not belong there, Amar did not have the audacity to bring his BMW powered by the fuel of satin so why on earth that one Guy was allowed i have no idea

Exactly, I had to park it 12 miles away

Someone was wearing a bloody BMW cap that day too, we did get our own back on the 335D though when the MRC tuned Q7 6.0 V12 TDI taught the BMW 335D a lesson.

Your right. I had a 335 D and it was quicker then the D2 S8, me and RanjA8 dragged them on the way back from A8 Parts and the 335D beat my S8.

Tell you what though, I'm looking forward to GTI international 2012 and going down the strip in the RS6, I want to get a late 12 sec quarter mile and a 0-60 of 4.1 seconds at least.

http://www.motor-talk.de/forum/automatische-heckklappe-geht-das-t2778971.html

I have it translated. I'll be performing this mod in the next few weeks. Here is a good translation:

Yes .. well, didn't know anyone would be interested.

So, what you need:

- From a Mini Cooper, the convertible rooof electrohydraulic control unit (hydraulic pump, hose and damper)
- Closing unit from audi a8 4e (I'm assuming he means a door closer or trunk closer unit from the A8 4e).
- Two timing relays (one relay for the pump and the other for the original trunk opener)
- A power relay (to reverse the polarity of the pump)
- A push botton integrated with the license plate frame from an A8 4e (so you can open the boot while standing right next to it)

1. Safety: Install the switch so that the pump turns off when the trunk lid is closed. Otherwise the pressure will destroy the dampers.
2. Safety: - Motor overload switch (I'm working on one, but it is not easy ...for me)
- Hydraulic pressure switch (I'm working on one, but it is not easy ... for me)
3. Safety - Connect the entire system to the rear parking sensors so that if something is obstructing, the trunk won't open.

When closing everything runs off the timing relay, but the pump stops as soon as the locks engage and then the closing device pulls the trunk lid completely shut.

It also works without the closing device, but the trunk dampers won't be able to completely close the trunk (due to their mounting angle) (this was my first attempt ... video 1)

As for the costs, it depends on how/where you obtain the Mini Cooper hydraulic control unit. Other hydraulic units will work, for instance VW Eos or ford. My unit cost me 50 Euros.

Also:
- The Audi a8 4e closing units from an auction site is about 20 €
- The Audi a8 4e tailgate pushbutton (outside) is about 20 €
- 2 timing relays is about 19 €
- Power supply relay is about 4 € (I had some laying around....)
- Relays and small things like screws, etc.
- For those not experienced with electrical stuff, a fire extinguisher is about 20 €

It is a little bit of work. My colleagues always laugh when I start a project, but I have fun and if something works then it is really gratifying.

By the way, connect the push button on the license plate frame to the central locking system! Because the car boot is not supposed to open when the vehicle is locked.

I hope this has been helpful. If you have any questions I will answer as best I can.

Greetings,
Krischan

Working on this some more, could anyone with some D3 experience give some thoughts or info on the mechanism in that car? I can't seem to find info anywhere. I'd like a more OEM appearing solution to be sure.

The D3 unit is a motor located at the right hand side of the boot that works the hinge for the lid. Gets a signal from the central locking to open, and from a button inside to close.

How different is the hinge? If I could get the OE D3 mechanism to work, that would be optimal. Electrically I can make it work fine, I'm just worried about hard attaching points, how different they are.

That works now. I can't get vagcat to open on any of my devices or machines. I'm not too sure why. Is the site down? Or are my freedoms to browse being impeded (wouldn't surprise me, but I don't dare turn this thread political).

Also, they appear similar enough I may be able to make it work. I'm going to pick up hinges at least, found a pair for only $45 (roughly 29 pounds). I can go from there methinks. I already know the latching mechanism will work.

I thought the hinges looked pretty similar too, would love to get an OEM solution for this on mine.

I think VAGcat must be limited in functionality to people outside of Europe. Try using http://openproxy.co.uk/ and then access it through there. +++

This link is useful to understand the D3 system:

http://audiforum.us/threads/audi-a8-electric-trunk-bootlid-rear-lid.12168/

You can download "Boot lid.pdf" file, which includes extract from ELSA about D3 boot lid drive.

The hinge on the driver side has a pin which the motor slides into, this is what raises and lowers the boot when you operate the motor.

I have the old motor from my D3 which I replaced as it would not lift the boot without some assistance. It could be that it just requires new brushes to have full power again, or it may even work on the D2 boot lid depending on the weight of it. New motors sell for around £400-£450 so if you are looking for a bargain drop me a pm.

There is an attachment on this thread (http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/showthread.php?t=4346) post #5 by PsYcHe which gives some detail +++

It'd involve cutting holes in the body of the D2. The D3 holes are already there and the hinge mechanism is quite different if I remember rightly :(

Architex_mA8tey
17th August 2012, 11:53 AM
or maybe some kind of adapter plate could be made to utilise the same holes and welded to the D3 bracket

I definitely don't want any holes in my car :tuttut:

Another idea. In D2 we have two standard struts: 4D0 827 551 B

Length : 403.5 mm
Outer Diameter 1 : 8 mm
Outer Diameter 2 : 19 mm
Eject Force : 310 N
Stroke : 161 mm

As you see, eject force is relatively small for strut of this size. The idea is to custom order struts with higher eject force so that the boot will open 'automatically'.

But there's a risk: If the struts are too powerful they will make the lid fly into the rear windscreen, damaging everything, including hinges. Also, strut power varies with temperature. They are stronger in summer and weaker in winter. But it maybe worth trying!

Here's a video of installing stronger struts. It is for Golf and there's no risk of hitting rear windscreen, but take a look:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7RgZTIMsJLc

Now for D2 we can order custom made stainless steel (!) struts with variable force, which means they will fill it with gas to maximum, and we can then reduce eject force to desired level with a supplied valve. They can be re-gassed to maximum again if sent back to manufacturer. Take a look here:

http://www.strutsdirect.co.uk/components/stainless-steel-gas-struts.php

I want to order it just because it's stainless steel! Model SDSS-02 will maybe work for us in terms of geometry and it is capable of 75 - 650N eject force range, which is up to twice stronger than our struts.

Fully custom config is also orderable:

http://www.strutsdirect.co.uk/components/made-to-order-gas-struts.php

I would try this approach before cutting any holes. And I guarantee it'll be dead quiet comparatively with motors stuff! ...If it'll work in principal of course... :)

The point of power boot is that it can open and close with a push of button.

Stronger struts might push it open but it might fail to open at all because of higher tension to the lock it might not disengage to allow opening.

And when it's open you will need extra force to close it.

notorious
17th August 2012, 01:04 PM
Sure, I take these concerns on board. All these ideas should be tested. And yes, you still have to close it manually.

71camaro
17th August 2012, 04:01 PM
I'm not going to try the stronger struts, that does nothing to make this work as I want. I'm not opposed to cutting one or two small holes though. What I'd like to do is perhaps build a hybrid hinge using the D2 and the D3 hinge, and use the D3 motor. I think I could make a tidy little setup that way.
