View Full Version : Audi Service or done at home?

OK - car telling me a service is due (94K on the clock).

With it being 12 years old and of average nick, but having a full service Audi service up to the last one, is it worth continuing with going to Audi or doing it myself but finding someone local on here to reset the service reminder using VAGCOM??

I suppose the other question is how easy is it to do the plugs air and oil filter myself or is it better to leave it to the experts?

I have two thoughts on this - Get Audi to do it and if I do decide to sell, it might make it a bit easier (piece of mind for the prospective owner) to pass it on, or realise that the price I would get would be low whether it was serviced or not so save the pennies and do it myself and pass this on with a reasonable sale price.......?

What do you lot reckon:Confused:

what about a local Audi Independant? I use one up here not sure he is cheaper but he is miles better+++

Spark plugs and oil/air filter on a D2 is very very easy. Get the parts from TPS and do it yourself? If in doubt, look for a guide on Audipages.

12 years old, 120,000 miles. Audi haven't seen it for at least 5 years. +++
(Local independent specialist; I don't do plumbing - as I've said elsewhere :D )

OK - moving me closer to doing it myself.

Last service was done by an independent (IVC in Leeds) who I found to be well priced and gave very good service, but the hourly charge is always too much!!!

What about someone local that can reset the service indicator once done??

I am sure somebody can. Or you can just record the mileage and date when you do it and reset later as you can enter the mileage and time till next service directly and the somebody will do it for you in next meet.

How much was the hourly charge anyway? Depends on location but I think £40 is about right.

Think IVC charge around £60 - will have to dig out an old receipt.

I think I have the tools to do the service myself (not sure about the fuel filter yet but will have a look at Audi Pages) as just carried out the service on the Focus.
Just looked at GSF's site and it comes out at around £160 for the parts which isn't to bad (the focus cost £50 in parts....)

Will have a look at TPS for the parts also.

Cheers

Would absolutely recomend doing it your self to save the money. Its all a straight forward job:)

Dealers her charge £140 an hour so doing at home is a must:)

As said it's all very easy on the D2, even the fuel filter. When I changed mine I didn't even jack the car up and it took about 10 mins :) If you keep all the receipts and mark up the service book with the mileage, date etc, I think that would satisfy most prospective buyers of a car of that age and mileage that the car had been serviced regularly, and if as said you use TPS parts, they will be OEM parts which you may not get from sending it to an independent.

I let the local dealer service my S8, it actually costs less than my dad's 55 plate 1.6 focus when he takes it to Ford's !!

Cheers Darren. Will take you up on the offer when I get the part together and serviced.
Fortunately (or not as the case may be!!) I am working away 5 days a week so don't get to put much mileage on it so will not have do the service straight away:rolleyes:

Cheers all+++

Could you explain the procedure to reset service indicator, without going via the OBD II port, please? My car's a 2001 S8.

Start with the key in, but the ignition turned OFF
Press and hold the 0,0 button, while turning the ignition on (position 2)
Release the 0,0 button
"SERVICE" should now appear on the display

Press and hold the 0,0 button until the display shows "SERVICE IN xxxx Miles / Kilometres"

Release the 0,0 button, then turn off the ignition

I think there maybe a slightly different version but this worked for me.

This doesn't work for me on my '96 D2, I just end up with a reset trip odometer :)

Does anyone know if there is a procedure for do it without VCDS on a car of my vintage?

Don't think so mate, we have a vintage when Audi were not playing fair.

I'll have my laptop next week if you want to meet up for a reset

Well, finally started the process of servicing the car:)
Carried out the easy bits this afternoon - air filter and spark plugs.

Thanks to Amar managed to get a good deal on the parts so off we go:)

A few pictures as words are boring +++

A view of the engine with no plastic on and one of the plugs out:

Which ones the old one?:

Old air filter was very poor quality compared the new one (Bosch):

Where the filter came from (what is the item at the bottom?):

Lost a screw that holds the coil packs to the engine down the engine - will get it out tomorrow when I take the tray out to do the oil change.

Will continue tomorrow:)

Very satisfying doing your own work on the car, I serviced my wife's Mini today, took the best part of 40 minutes from start to finish.

That air filter looks like it's not been changed for a long time. :tuttut:

I personally would leave the oil filler cap on while your working on the top of the engine. If you had dropped you coil pack bolt in there it might have made the job very complicated :)

Yes please :)
Will be in all day as trying to do the final stages so PM me with your number if you can make today+++

I had to take the oil cap off as I didn't have an extension bar so it was stopping me from getting any leaverage on the coilpack nuts :(

Point taken though (it was put back on when I started to do the rest though)+++

Well - didn't go to plan :(

Plugs changed :)
Air filter changed :)
Oil changed :)
Oil filter changed (what a b@st@rd) :)

Brake pads (half done):(

Didn't check all the pads in the box as assumed they are good so fitted one side OK.
Started on the other - removed all the old pads then started to put the new ones in but hit a problem - see pic:

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a373/gninnamag/Audi%20A8/Service/2012-03-25191342.jpg

3 of the same so won't fit
So, had to put the old ones back in and put the car away, Not at home until Thursday so will try and get GSF to replace the wrong ones - not going to take the ones I have put in..........)

On Thursday will also change the fuel filter then put new tyres on the front and off on holiday to the French Alps +++

Just hope I can get it all done by then

Also respect to Limoncello - turned up today and reset the service indicator plus carried out a scan.+++

Not to bad (a few knowns such as the alarm not being right and one of the rear Potentiometer for the vent - which I had disconnected) no serious ones but will require a check when I come back.

Swapped and put them all in this morning.

Trouble at'Mill:(

Can notice a vibration above 45 but calms a little at 80.
Braking at speed induces a serious judder.
Steering wheel does not seem to suffer though, just feeling these through the car.

Thinks the disks might be warped and down at Dover now so will just have to suffer until I get back next week.

Unless you've thrown a weight off a rear wheel. Had a similar thing before (funilly enough on a trip to France), quick balance and away we went.

Wheel balance would be number 1 for me - Always seemed more pronounced under braking on the D2 for some reason.

Warped discs is less likely unless you've been nailing it particularly hard just recently....

HPsauce

I'll second that.
One of my winter wheels was a bit imbalanced and on the rear (left) due to minor damage.
The vibration peaked at about 65-70 and was very noticeable when braking - not a common long-term speed for an S8 fortunately. :o

Back on my summers and it's all smooth as silk now. +++

(tyres will be moved round before next winter so that the imperfect wheel is the spare, assuming it's serviceable which it appears to be)

wheel balance or bushes

Hope it is just a wheel needs balancing.
On Friday had the 2 front tyres replaced so on Monday will try and find garage down here that can do it..

Pain being stuck to no more than 80mph.

Only 250 miles to go......

I buy my tyres mail order in France, and then use the network of fitters approved by the company. They'll have one near you - but facilities vary from one to the next.
http://ssl.delti.com/cgi-bin/stationssuche.pl?dsco=125
Many have full four wheel tracking, balancing etc.
Good luck

Hi Chris.

Thanks for the tip - went to one of the garages on the site but only by appointment so popped round the corner to a 'Roady' and got done straight away (32 Euro's for all four wheels balanced).
Managed to get it up to 70 on the D road and no noticeable shake so hopefully all sorted now:D
