thought I would check to see what the OE spec was on my 2000 sport q, read the VIN off the V5 and inputted into one of those check programmes which said .....no such car exists , special anti cloning figure inserted

ah , obvious error here , somebody inputted a wrong figure on the V5 , went to car ,lifted bonnet , checked sticker .....SAME VIN !

wtf ....have I got a mondeo with an audi grill stuck on the front or something ?

anyone got an explanation or could suggest a definitive site to check again?

Which VIN check site did you use? Just checked mine on the www.NICB.org site and it tells me that it is not listed in the theft or total loss records. I know that doesnt help you (! ) but just wondered if its a matter of interpretation?

thanks for that david ....says that that VIN isn't recorded as stolen or written off , which is a start !

doesn't say it exists though !

mixing zeros and 'O's, 5 and S etc is all easy to do so tripple check that first

They all start WAUZZZ4D, then 2 numbers (2nd of which is single digit model year so 2 for 2002), then N, then 6 numbers

If in doubt still get Audi to check it on their systems

checked and double checked !
incidentally mine goes 4 letters after the 4 and before the 6 numbers

is that too many fore's ?

If you can see it, sit in it, start it, drive it, it exists ..... Probably. However being just a few hours short of the end of days, a bit of armageddon could be leaking over

Well my 2001 is this.

WAUZZZ4DZ1N******

The number 1 before the N is a year, so it has to be a number. So if yours is a 2000 then its a zero and not the letter O.

well , mine goes WZUZZZ4DZYN******

did a quick check ,started year code letters in 1980 , got to Y in 2000 , then changed to numbers +++

wonder what happened in 2010 ?

According to Wikipedia:

"One consistent element of the VIS is the 10th digit, [the character before "N"] which is required worldwide to encode the model year of the vehicle. Besides the three letters that are not allowed in the VIN itself (I, O and Q), the letters U and Z and the digit 0 are not used for the model year code. Note that the year code is the model year for the vehicle."

So according to that the VIN wont use "0" (zero) for the year whichitself is the MODEL year and not year of registration.

So far so good, but my 10th digit is "3" and yet the car is not a 2003 model?

^^^ what he said

You lot are all driving ringers. I wouldn't do too much worring about it or too much digging, or you'll end up having to give it back to the rightfull owner

mystery solved ...in 2010 they went back to letters , so it is possible that a 1980 car has the same VIN as a 2010 car

and when they run through the letters they are gong to have 9 years of digits and then .......

hang on ...world ends tomorrow ...why am I wondering about this ?

Model year is not the same as registration year - 2003 model year probably started sometime around Sept/Oct 2002

Why are we worrying about this AT ALL! When OldNick started this, I thought (as he is a French resident) that it was about Vin Rouge/blanc - not bloody vehicle numbers.

Just off to get outdoors a bit more.....

Exactly the point I was making. Mines a FL D2 (registered in 02) so I thought the model year would be for the start of the FL model introduction ('99).

Oh! I forgot, I am still supposed to be outside getting some air.....

model year is typically 1 after the year you are on as there are little changes every year...

afraid the terminology is a little fuzzy...in europe it is normally the PRODUCTION year , which commences after the summer shut down ; any minor tweaks are normally put in at that point if possible , any line changes can then be made during shut down

with american cars you used to be able to buy , for example , a 2003 model year vehicle from january 2002 !!! I think it's called marketing

don't know about the uk , but france is still here , as am I ! not for much longer though , fire up the hymer and off to somewhere warmer for a few months , maybe get as far as estepona  [ she who must be obeyed doesn't like north africa ]

I know this is an ancient thread, but it came up while I was searching to try and check something out.
This relevant information was posted on another forum, by someone in N America re the "Model Year":

April 2002 = the last month of construction of the 2002 model year A8s and S8s.

Your VIN (In response to me saying my car was built in April 2002)..... will be something like:

WAUGU44D22N007697 (end of March 2002) to WAUGU44D22N020000 (end of April 2002).

The 2003 Model year started builds in May 2002 with WAUGU44D23N000001

It did occur to me that the 2003 Model Year might correlate with Final Editions, but information elsewhere suggests they first appeared quite early in 2002, well before April/May.

I can vouch for Estepona as I am here right now
Really warm here at the moment 30 degrees in the shade.
Dry, warm and sunny. Not a cloud in the sky.
Must go for a cold beer now as this typing is thirsty work :ROFL:
