Moving upto 20's

Hi guys ,
Just bought a 98 S8 PF , I want to get a set of 20" BBS LM Replicas fitted ASAP , a wheel manufacturer called "Dare" do a set that look pretty good .

Now I want them staggered at the back , so can anyone fill me in with what size wheels and tyres i need to go for , baring in mind I have absolutely no understanding of offsets and that lot , so any explanations would be appreciated.
I understand that I may also need spacers so any links as to what to get would be great ,

when you say you want them staggered do you mean you actually want the rear wheels to be wider than the front wheels (mine are 10.5" rears with 295 tyres and 255 front on 9" wheels) or do you want to just space out the rear ones to look more like a staggered set?

You do need to make sure if your wheels are staggered front and rear that the rolling radius of the front wheels and tyres are no more than 1% difference in diameter than the rears or you will get issues with the abs sensors / quattro system throwing up faults as it thinks the wheels are slipping due to the imbalance.

I want the deep dish (polished Chrome part) to be slightly wider at the rear but the overall tyres sizes to be similar if possible and don't want any issues with fault codes etc , hence asking for advice as i don't understand how all this works , i was told that you shouldn't stagger your wheels on a 4WD but wasn't sure if that was because the particular suppliers of the wheel i enquired about (not those listed below) didn't didn't supply what i needed and were just saying that to get me to buy their brand of wheels.

I don't have money to burn here so i want to make sure i get it right first time with tyre and wheel sizes , for example are these suitable and if so what would be the correct tyre sizes to have so as not to throw up any codes

So what i'm basically looking for is someone to tell me what size tyres and spacers i need to go with these wheels to make everything look / drive ok or what size wheels, tyres and spacers i need for this to work with this brand of wheels .
Sorry if i sound awkward but i genuinely dont have a clue here :D

if you want genuinely staggered wheels then you need the 2 different widths on the front and the back but you then need to pick tyre sizes for each axle that will result in the same rolling radius front and back or within 1%

You can use a site like www.willtheyfit.com to check one axle's overall rolling radius against the other. if you use my wheels as an example -

front wheel size is shown in green and the rears in orange.
The difference between the wheel sizes is 5.6mm which is 0.81% difference so under the 1%

if you find a set of wheels you like then you need to look at -
a) what size you have now versus what size you will have (to check for and be aware of any speedo error percentage)
b) compare rears to front on rolling radius to check you are within the 1% difference.

The guy I bought my staggered Kahn wheels from didnt understand this and had 30 profile tyres on the front and rears and was getting quattro errors and sold the car (A8 D3) and the wheels because of not understanding the issue!

I would go for something like below on the 2 sizes as the rolling radius works - only 0.22% difference in radius.

you would have 255's on the front and 295's on the back but at slightly different profiles.

I'm starting to understand things a little more now , the car's booked in for a stainless exhaust next week , so the wheels will follow that

What exhaust?

I searched for real stainless exhaust for some time and haven't found one. They are all made from cheap 304 'stainless' steel, which will rust.

I use MIJ Performance in Walsall for my exhausts , they've built a few systems for me over the years and to be honest i've never really had any issues with them , but then again i do keep them cleaned and polished so that might be why :D

Yeah they put it up on a lift and custom build one to your own specifications (sound / tail pipes etc)

lol sorry , yes it has been known , i'm a pro detailer so when cleaning the car in general i always get under and do the back box at least but we do have access to a ramp at work so depending on how we use the cars we have been known to machine polish the entire exhaust system , bit anal i know :o
never had any issues with them going rusty though , not a stainless system anyway

Had a look into the cost of the tyres if i go for the 10" wide ones on the back then they are pretty much pricing me out of my budget , so if i go for a set that are 8.5j 35et , what would be the best tyre size to go for and spacer size .

does anyone by chance know of which brand of hubcentric spacers to go for as there's lots out there and i dont want to pick up a crap set ,

If car is not a weekend / owner meets toy I'd suggest to go for 18' genuine Audi alloys. I personally like this ones:

And I'd suggest to buy 245/50 R18 tyres. They are taller then stock 245/45 R18. Will fully occupy wheel arch.

20' tyres are expensive if you go for right stuff like Michelin. And it'll be recurring annual expense as hi performance tyres will wear out quickly. Plus, you'll get tired to change suspension as 20' are much rougher ride.

I'd go for either H&R or Eibach hubcentric spacers. They are superb quality and you won't need to buy more wheel bolts as most of them bolt to your hub then you use your normal wheel bolts to bolts the wheels on.
With 8.5" wheels I would go for 20mm spacers per side at the rear and 15mm per side at the front which will space things out nicely

I'm fitting a set of 20" alloys to mine. They were on the car before but they're being refurbed in shadow chrome with stainless bolts. They're 10"x20" at the back with 275/30/20 tyres and 8.5"x 20" at the front with 245/35/20 tyres. The alloys I have are 5x114 so will be using wobble bolts to make them fit.
