Hi guys,

I would like to do the full service on my recently purchased Audi A8 4.2, 1996 PF model.

I have seen that there is quite a variant of parts available - for example different types of spark plugs. Could you recommend the best ones?

What I would like to change is:

Oil - what would be the best for 4.2 engine with 116k miles on the clock? Do you know what is the quantity the engine takes?
Spark plugs - seen different types - any recommendations?
Brake pads - any feedback on those? Seen Brembo and Lucas, which is twice the price of the Brembo ones.

Cheers,
Tom

Here are my thoughts, hopefully someone else will chime in too with more advice.

Spark plugs - oem only (Bosch platinum +4) everyone reccomends staying with these.
Oil - I only use Castrol Edge 5W30, Oli is a oil expert and I think he said Castrol have really good aditives. My car uses no oil and its on 129k miles. 4.2 should take 7.2l. never use dino oil, only fully synthetic.
I stayed with Brembo pads, they seem good to me.
Change power steering fluid if its never been flushed.
Change fuel filter.
Flush brake fluid.
Change air filter, clean airbox thoroughly.

Thanks a lot!

Would you be able to tell me what are the quantities for brake and steering fluids? I do not have the manual available unfortunately :(

Also, is the rocker cover / valve cover gasket set readily available from lets say Eurocarparts? Need to change them as its leaking pretty badly.

So far I have:

Audi A8 1996 4.2 quattro service

Oil Castrol Edge 5W-30 8l 55.98
Spark Plugs Bosch HGR 7 KQC 8 31.68
Oil Filter UFI Oil Filter 1 7.14
Air Filter Hengst Air Filter 1 10.08
Polen Filter Hengst Pollen Filter 1 15.54
Brake Pads Front Pagid Brembo 1 33.54
Brake Pads Rear Pagid Lucas 1 17.7
PS Fluid
Brake Fluid

Total 171.66

I would keep away from Pagid brake pads as I had a case of new ones cracking (See http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/showthread.php?t=6505)

Stick with Brembo or Audi OEM pads. Use the link below to identify the right ones:

http://bremboaftermarket.com/It/Car_Disc_Catalogue/Catalogue_Search.aspx

nextdaybrakes.com were around £57 for the Brembos.

Yes, forgot the Pagid pads, and add the fuel filter on the list too.

Thanks for the info guys.

I was actually looking at brembo brake pads as the price in EuroCarParts is quite high for the front ones.

I was told by ebay seller of Brembo brake pads that Brembo model:
P 85 038 is for the Lucas Brake System
P 85 053 is for the Brembo Brake System

Apparently it can be identified by checking the mark on the caliper. Not sure which one is it, would need to check tonight, but if this is Lucas system then I would need: P 85 038.

This seller will have them available next week apparently.
nexdaybrakes do not have any in stock.

The build sticker identifies Brembo fit as "1ZL" . The Brembo pad number for the Front = P85 053 - as you have been informed.

On PF cars there was only Girling/Lucas(314mm or 323mm) front brakes, Teves(360mm) and Brembo(345mm) were available only from 12/1998.

Only difference on 1996 car would be either 314mm or 323mm discs.
Audi's brake pad numbers are different for 314mm and 323mm but I believe they are interchangeable.

Now that will be difficult for them to get to you next day then.

Both the Lucas 314 & 323mm calipers look identical too, as i found out when i changed mine for a pair i recycled from an early S. I had to change the disc's too. Pads did indeed all look the same face to face size wise.

Thanks guys. Went through the old receipts and previously there were some discs purchased at GSF, part number: NBD713. It cross references with Ferodo DDF954 - which seems to be 314mm disc brake.

Ok, so it seems I have Lucas system, as I dont have PR:1ZL code on the sticker and as per ainarssems LUCAS was mounted on PF cars therefore I would need Brembo pads P 85 038 for the front and P 85 013 for the rear. I think...?
Although on the Brembo site they have brake pads for LUCAS and BREMBO systems for 314mm discs...

Here is some info from ElsaWin, looks like total quantity of brake fluid is 1l.
Please note, Audi dealer charges £99 for a full brake fluid flush (total, no additional VAT etc) which is not that bad considering they have the special machine which flushes out the ESP system (if your car has ESP).

Only use new brake fluid -B 000 700 A- (corresponds to US standard FMVSS 116 DOT 4).
Changing the brake fluid with brake charge and bleed equipment -VW 1238/B- → Chapter
Changing the brake fluid with brake charge and bleed equipment -V.A.G 1869- → Chapter
Changing the brake fluid with brake charge and bleed equipment -VAS 5234- → Chapter
Changing the brake fluid with brake charge and bleed equipment -VW 1238/B- or -V.A.G 1869-
Special tools and workshop equipment required
> Brake charge and bleed equipment -VW 1238-, -V.A.G 1238/1- or -V.A.G 1238/B-

– Fit bleeder hose leading to brake fluid collector onto bleeder screw on clutch slave cylinder.
– Then switch on bleeder appliance and allow about 100 cm3 of brake fluid to drain out.
– Close bleeder screw and switch off bleeder appliance.
– Attach cap.
Continuation for all vehicles:
– Remove caps from bleeder screws.
Sequence for changing brake fluid in brake calipers:
1 - Front left-hand brake caliper
2 - Front right-hand brake caliper
3 - Rear left-hand brake caliper
4 - Rear right-hand brake caliper
– Remove caps from bleeder screws.
– Fit bleeder hose leading to brake fluid collector onto bleeder screw for relevant brake caliper.
– Switch on bleed equipment, open bleeder screw and allow about 200 cm3 of brake fluid to drain out.
Used brake fluid is pushed out of the system when new fluid is pumped in.
– Close bleeder screw.
– Perform the same procedure at the remaining bleeder screws.

Continuation for all vehicles:
– Remove caps from bleeder screws.

– Connect bleeder hose -1- attached to collector bottle to bleeder screw (front left), switch on bleeder equipment, open bleeder screw and allow approx. 200 ml of brake fluid to flow out. Close bleeder screw.
Repeat the procedure on the other front side of the vehicle.
– Connect bleeder hose -1- attached to collector bottle to bleeder screw (rear left), open bleeder screw and allow approx. 200 ml of brake fluid to flow out. Close bleeder screw.
Repeat the procedure on the other rear side of the vehicle.
Table - sequence for changing brake fluid / quantities

Front left 200 ml
Front right 200 ml
Rear left 200 ml
Rear right 200 ml
Total quantity → Note 1000 ml

2) including brake fluid extracted from brake fluid reservoir and fluid changed in hydraulic clutch system
– Fit caps back on bleeder screws on brake calipers.
– Move filling lever on -VAS 5234- to position -B- (see operating instructions).
– Detach filling hose from adapter.
– Unscrew adapter from brake fluid reservoir.

– Check brake fluid level and correct as necessary.
– Screw cap onto brake fluid reservoir.
– Check pedal pressure and free travel (no more than 1/3 of total pedal travel).
– During the final test drive, make sure that at least one ABS-controlled brake application is carried out (with noticeable pulsing of brake pedal).

Please note:

A pressure of at least 2 bar is required for bleeding the ESP hydraulic unit. Therefore always check the pressure setting on the bleeding device.

First, all of the brake calipers are bled using the conventional method, but in a different sequence.

Afterwards the ESP hydraulic pump needs to be bled. This is done using the fault reader.

The fault reader is used to actuate the hydraulic pump for 10 s.

This actuation must only be carried out a maximum of 3 times in succession (approx. 30 sec.). Then the pump must be left to cool for at least 5 minutes.

POWER STEERING FLUID
I used this procedure on Audipages. The facelift D2 requires 2 litres, best to buy 3 just in case and for a bit of a flush.

Seems like Brembo pads are out of stock everywhere in the UK.

Any other recommended makes? Bosch?

Thanks.

Quote from one seller:
Unfortunately we do not do Bosch, we have Apec (non branded brembo), Mintex or EBC.

In my opinion the Apec are the best value for money as they are very good quality and cheaper than the others.

Anyone used Apec?

Any feedback would be appreciated.

I was told by the seller that these should fit my A8

Front:
BOSCH BP402
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/330866462638?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fsch% 2Fi.html%3F_sacat%3D0%26_from%3DR40%26_nkw%3D33086 6462638%26_rdc%3D1

But I think this is more appropriate as the year matches - part number is the same though:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bosch-FRONT-Brake-Disc-Pads-Audi-A8-4-2-quattro-QF3881-/290854983348?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Car+Make%3AAudi|Model%3AA8&hash=item43b84ed6b4

Not sure about the rear ones though at all.

Guy says this should fit:

But I reckon this might be this one?
BOSCH BP617
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bosch-REAR-Brake-Disc-Pads-Audi-A8-4-2-quattro-QF3881-/290854448768?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Car+Make%3AAudi|Model%3AA8&hash=item43b846ae80

Any ideas how to check exact Bosch part numbers?

Thanks.

Best to search by Audi part number or cross-reference. Hope this helps:

Thank you.

I actually went on the online version of etka: http://www.partscats.com/

Part numbers I have found (similar to yours above):
FRONT: 4D0698151E
REAR: 4D0698451G

Now started to look for cross references - Bosch ones.

So:
FRONT
AUDI: 4D0698151E
BOSCH: 0 986 424 689
Which corresponds to: BP402
http://www.mister-auto.co.uk/en/brake-pads-front/bosch-0-986-424-689_g900005_a0300!986!424!689.html
£35.33 - quite cheap?

REAR
AUDI: 4D0698451G
BOSCH: 0 986 494 059
Which corresponds to: BP783
http://www.mister-auto.co.uk/en/brake-pads-rear/bosch-0-986-494-059_g900006_a0300!986!494!059.html?KTypeNr=3881

Would that be right or shall I check with Audi Dealer for the confirmation of part numbers based on my VIN?

Cheers,
Tom

The front ones are cheap but no mention of E or AD part numbers, does mention B which would be for 323mm. Like I said I think they are interchangeable but not 100% sure.

Funny thing is that the cross reference for Bosch shows pads for 323mm discs and not 314.

I kind of giving up with this. Plan for tomorrow is to:

1. Phone Audi dealer/TPS and find out the exact Audi part number for my car based on the VIN if possible.
2. Try to find the cross reference number for Bosch brake pads based on the above.

Thanks for your help guys.

So I phoned the http://www.mister-auto.co.uk with the following part numbers for my 1996 A8 4.2 Quattro PF model:

Brake pads front:
4D0698151E or 4D0698151AD

Brake pads rear:

4D0698451B or 4D0698451G

Bosch did not crossreference but TRW did.
Cross reference for TRW

Brake pads front:
GDB1162

Brake pads rear:
GDB1163

The dimensions for those are the same for the Bosch pads:

Brake pads front:
0986424689
BP402

Brake pads rear:
0986494059
BP783

Total cost with 'insurance' free collection and return if the parts do not fit (£1.57) was £45.90 although i have just recieved a message saying that the Bosch front set is not available and they will refund me :| So rear ones were £9 + £1.57.

Will order from AutoPerformanceOnline:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bosch-FRONT-Brake-Disc-Pads-Audi-A8-4-2-quattro-QF3881-/290854983348?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Car+Make%3AAudi|Model%3AA8&hash=item43b84ed6b4
£52.63.

Will provide an update here as to whether they are going to fit OK.

Cheers,
Tom
