…so the time has come to finally swap to the 18" wheels and the Michelin Alpins (which need a bit of spit and polish…), and which look awfy wee after the 20's. Definitely a softer ride though…

Indeed it is!

My 18" Avus wheels and winter tyres went on a couple of weeks ago. Like you, I think they look small, but the ride is softer - and quieter!

The Avus wheels do look better than 9 spokes on 18" rims IMO, and think it's nice to have a "Winter contrast" to the Summer 20" FE rims

Also had winter wheels put on A6 yesterday. S8 does not do enough mileage to have separate winter wheels and tyres, only done a bit over 2000 miles between last 2 MOT's and 900 or so of them were for annual meet.

Wheels were refurbished before going on car as well, they are standard 16" 5 spoke wheels with a bit higher profile tyres(205/60R16). Could not decide on colour, wife wanted glossy black, which I did not think would look good at all, was considering matte silver myself but went for gunmetal at the end as middle way. Still did not know to do glossy or matte on my way to refurbishers. In the end went for gloss gunmetal. Have not got any pictures but will try to take some tomorrow.

Having got some winter wheels (courtesy of Dan) i got around to fitting them this weekend - and very nice they look too IMHO. Brand new (almost) Nokian tyres and flawless fat 5 wheels. (Thanks Dan). They appear much darker in the flesh than the photos show - just about the same colour as brake dust ( +++ ). Even though they are 245/50R18s (albeit on a 8.5J) as opposed to 245/45R18 of the standard wheels, they appear bigger all round.

Now, where's the snow!!
