Hopefully driving home a D2 S8 later today :)

Have only a chance to look at the paperwork and check out the interior and bodywork in failing light. Not even test driven yet (later today) but hopefully all goes well.

It needs a cambelt change (price negotiated accordingly) and a good detail session. A few deepish scratches on the (non-sunroof) roof and boot lid may need professional attention, so I will take it to a bodyshop that deals with ally panel repairs for an opinion. Panels are otherwise straight and true.

Gearbox overhauled 10k miles ago and whilst stationary at least, changes up and down seamlessly.

Does have the engine light displayed on the dash, believed to be a faulty lambda sensor as listed in the invoices, but will get the codes output to confirm if anything else.

Looks like a relatively standard spec'd car (I prefer 'lightweight' :) ) - not unattractive, to me at least!

Colour code is missing from options sticker - does this means it's a non standard colour?

Mot sheet mentioned a couple of times that the engine cover 'restricted access' or something along those lines - is this normal?

Mot also mentioned an oil leak - is there a usual spot for these engines to leak from ?

Latterly serviced by lespauls-audivw in Woodford, London, and by RA Engineering in Reading prior to that ( they also undertook the gearbox rebuild)

That is normal on all cars

by RA Engineering in Reading prior to that ( they also undertook the gearbox rebuild)

Are they a gearbox/ZF specialist? If not, this would certainly raise a concern.

So im back and so is the S8

Gave it a wash, clay and wax as the paint was in poor condition - a bit rushed but much better than before

Only managed to cover 20 odd miles in it but have enjoyed these very much! First time v8 owner so even blipping the throttle put a smile on the face :) average 15.9 mpg less so but this is about the same as the Beemer I'll be moving on shortly.

Loved its get up and go, but will have to get used to the loud pedal as i found it very sensitive.easy to hit illegal speeds without realising too!

Few areas need attention:

Smell of oil on the exhaust- last nvoice suggests leaking transmission sump - could this be it? I'd like to get a trans oil change done anyway, maybe a good time to get seen too.

Previous invoice also noted 'signs of coolant stains on the engine' - not sure how I missed this when viewing it but could this be serious? Engine temps were solid at 90deg, no signs of Mayo in the oil filler either so hopefully not serious.

2-3 dings on each flank need sorting - could a PDR chap remove these or would I need to go to a specialist in Ally repairs? Recommendations in the south east (London/Herts area)?

Cambelt change - are Audi recommended for Cambelt change or should I get and indie to do it - initial quote requests show they are very similar, but don't know if the Audi dealer work cover as much as an Indie.

2 front lower door trims need replacing

Aside from that, it drove really well. Possibly a slight shimmy/vibration at 70 but will check wheel weights are still in place. Won't get everything seen to at once, Cambelt and trans oil change up first methinks

If anyone can tell me how I can confirm the colour I'd really appreciate it!

Welcome, looks an interesting colour though I've no idea what it is.

The burning oil smell is pretty common, usually a leaking seal on one of the gearbox output shafts, dripping onto a catalyst. In the past I got those fixed when I couldn't stand the stink any more!

Nice car, and welcome from me too. I do like the body colour (I'm going to call it petrol blue…;) ..) and that combination with the leather interior looks very nice. It's probably worth checking out the provenance of the gearbox work in time, but if it drives fine I wouldn't worry too much.

Check the build sticker. Should be in the front of the service bool and also spare wheel well. This'll give you a load of letters A search on here will turn up a decoder for these. You will then have the paint and trim colours, plus all the bits and bobs it left the factory with.

Cheers all and 'Petrol Blue' is what I came up with on the drive back :)

The build sticker doesn't list the colour code as far as i can see - spare wheel well sticker is the same

Gearbox is working fine from what i can tell - once the cambelt and gearbox leak is sorted (thanks HPSauce) and all fluids have been changed, i'll start building a slush fund in case it pops a cog

Loving the non-sunroof look too although the waxing bit too that much longer :)

RA Engineering is long established - they did some work on my Mk1 Golf GTI when I lived in Reading. I doubt they will have refurbished the box in house - expect they removed/installed and sent it away to be done.

Looks a nice example - well done :)

The oil smell is difficult to get rid of completely - there's usually a weep coming from somewhere but it only needs a small amount to make it stink.

I've had the rear seal on the centre diff output changed twice in the last year and it still bloody leaks!

I'm also in south east London looking for a smart repair person to sort out one little ding and some scraped paint on a wheel arch.
After one ridiculous quote of £1000 from a repair shop used by Audi (I didn't go through Audi just contacted this place directly) I have been looking for smart repairers on this site http://www.smartmapuk.co.uk/

If I go to one of them and they are good, I'll let you know. If you find a good one please let me know.

i've used Jake previously at F1 dents - http://www.f1dents.co.uk/about_us.html - great guy and super skilled, but don't believe he would travel as far as South London.

I'll give him a shout and see if tackles aluminium panels (unsure if its makes a difference or not).

The alternative for me is to visit a bodyshop that has skills repairing aluminum cars - eg http://www.fastlanepab.co.uk/repair-centres/london-repair-centres - I doubt however that this would be the cheapest option, however i'm looking to get few scuffs looked at and maybe get it mopped and/or detailed.

Thanks, I will check them out. My small dent unfortunately has paint damage too so it may have to be filled, or at least smart-repaired after straightening.

Bodywork reapair is just a crippler on a car of this value unless you have desires to make it concors, the prices are always eye watering and usually require (if your nails catch on the scratch) a total respray of the panel and or replacement. Gets sooo expensive so quickly.

It looks neat. I think I actually prefer the clean look of that roof lining to the usual sunroof'd roof lining.

I think I'd miss my sunroof though.
