there is a small gap in the top corners due to the RNS-E having rounded corners and the fascia being more square, but its something i can easily live with.

Not much activity on this thread for 3 years I see :)

But now I fancy the idea of a fully functioning RNS-E (from RNS-D) in my 2002 S8.
The only problem is that I am not that technical. Certainly not as technical or experienced as some of you folks (almost said guys then!!!! :D)

So does anyone know of any person/business who would be willing and able to do this retrofit for me? And any idea of cost?

I've tried searching for CraigyB and tclsatnav.com (I've used him many years ago for a job) but those searches don't bring up anything useful so I guess that avenue is a dead end.

The C5 A6 is the one to have as that's the widest and can be trimmed down to fit. Thats an A3 unit in the pic since I had a couple kicking about. Its fine apart from the radius on the top corners is too large and leaves a gap.

I'd need to look, but there was a chap on ebay selling RNS-Es with the correct faceplate and a host of other options available to spec it how you want

For the small additional cost I would definitely get one of the later units with chrome power button - it doesn't then limit you to 4GB SD cards, which are a nightmare to get hold of now (most cheap 4GB SD cards are actually DSHC, just not marked as such, and don't work in the original RNS-E!)

You can also add an AMI interface (Notorious has one mounted in the cubby to the right of the steering column, which acts as a useful place to plug your phone in for charging/music) and I would definitely spec the bluetooth module for the OEM integration (doesn't do bluetooth streaming, unless the specs have changed with newer modules, which they might have)

I never found the lack of directions in the DIS bothered me that much, but maybe the member on here who has figured out CAN messages on the D3 instrument cluster could figure out why it doesn't work and knock up a suitable device to convert the signal?

Well, I'm crossing my fingers that you manage to have yours all fitted for the meet so that I can have a good look and play to see how well it integrates.
Are you planning on a reverse camera in yours as well?

The question I have to ask is, why? And this is a genuine serious question to give time to.

I've been around the same loop more than once and have finally settled on staying OEM with my RNS-D.

Everyone is different, but in the end (for me) changing a mid-1990s system for an early 2000s system didn't really seem to be a priority. I have the car, and enjoy it immensely, for other reasons.

And with the various add-ons I've integrated (Xcarlink, DVB-T tuner and reversing camera) it does everything I need it to anyway.
