It's not that difficult, it just has to be done right.
I'm sure MJ will have it in hand.

It's a very clever, yet tricky design due to the saddle tank design of the fuel tank and only a single pump. I've had mine out twice (eventually finding the problem not to be the pump!).
Even Audi techs get this installation wrong and Audi switched to a more conventional two pump system for the D3.

Edit: beaten to the punch by MJ herself!

Front brakes this evening.

Blasted and painted the caliper bracketry since I'm not bolting old rusty brackets to shiny new calipers!

Assembled with new hose ready to go back on

Back on the car with new Pagid disc and pads. The Pagid discs are coated from the factory so they stay looking good for longer :)

You might be able to answer this Michaela,
The loop of wire attached to the caliper bracket: I've seen this on several cars I've had, is it there literally for hanging the caliper onto the spring with a hook for use during pad/disc changes?

Ah, hang on... Forget all that! It's there to guide the hose during lock-to-lock on the steering and prevent it pinching or scraping or going anywhere undesirable isn't it!
That makes far more sense as to why they'd bother fitting it...
Using it to hang the caliper is just an unintended benefit!
:pint:

I have no idea why its there tbh. Protecting the hose is as good a reason as any :)

The discs look very similar to Meyle HD to me... Is it wrong to lust after such nice brake discs? I've always liked the look of those. With regard to the Pagid pads, my garage replaced my previous front set after squealing like a pig and they told me they were replaced with Pagid pads. I'd not really heard of them before but they certainly did the trick. Thanks again for all the regular updates MJ on this. The car being 'fettled' is absolutely perfect for us all to see what's going on, as it provides a nice contrast on the photos due to the vibrant red colour. I have to admit that it looks like a new car. The owner will be like a dog with two tails when it's finished, no doubt.

Sorry I've been slacking on the updates  The Pizza Dude just arrived at the workshop so here's a big one to compensate.

Electronics box repair - I've shown this before, but again for those who may have missed it.

Where the inserts have come out, drill the hole out to 7mm

http://www.corradov8.com/pics/h10ean/h10ean_187.jpg

Then countersink a little by hand with a 12mm

http://www.corradov8.com/pics/h10ean/h10ean_188.jpg

Then you need some of these guys - Type D threaded inserts

http://www.corradov8.com/pics/h10ean/h10ean_189.jpg

Screw them in the new holes, flush with the box

http://www.corradov8.com/pics/h10ean/h10ean_190.jpg

Fixed +++

I've bought new screws for the cover. I'll show them tomorrow.

Big Red ventured out in to the daylight for the first time in a month so she could turn round ready for the next few jobs.

This :eek3:

http://www.corradov8.com/pics/h10ean/h10ean_193.jpg

Cleaned off some underseal

http://www.corradov8.com/pics/h10ean/h10ean_194.jpg

http://www.corradov8.com/pics/h10ean/h10ean_195.jpg

The metal had stretched so I had to cut the edge back a little so the bits would go flush again. Had to resort to a self-tapper to pull the sprag out. I don't know what grade this stuff is, but its amazingly hard for 1mm thick. It was not fun to work with!

http://www.corradov8.com/pics/h10ean/h10ean_196.jpg

Got it flush

http://www.corradov8.com/pics/h10ean/h10ean_197.jpg

http://www.corradov8.com/pics/h10ean/h10ean_198.jpg

Prior to welding, I removed the arch liner and the two body bungs

http://www.corradov8.com/pics/h10ean/h10ean_199.jpg

So I could remove all this highly flammable expanding foam!

http://www.corradov8.com/pics/h10ean/h10ean_200.jpg

The local tig guy came by and welded it up. It was quite a tricky job since the panel was so thin, but attached to a 2 ton heatsink! I should have taken off the underseal a bit further I think.

http://www.corradov8.com/pics/h10ean/h10ean_201.jpg

I'll flatten this off a bit tomorrow and feather the underseal, then re-prime and try to match in some spray-on underseal.

Pulled the rear suspension off to do the bushes

http://www.corradov8.com/pics/h10ean/h10ean_202.jpg

http://www.corradov8.com/pics/h10ean/h10ean_203.jpg

The bushes in the bottom of the hub just popped out with a screwdriver! Proper fubar

http://www.corradov8.com/pics/h10ean/h10ean_205.jpg

The ones in the lower arm weren't much better although the alloy sleeves needed a little persuading

http://www.corradov8.com/pics/h10ean/h10ean_206.jpg

Definitely time for replacement. I made some tools to get them out and back in again

http://www.corradov8.com/pics/h10ean/h10ean_207.jpg

Cleaned up the arm ready for the new bushes

http://www.corradov8.com/pics/h10ean/h10ean_208.jpg

http://www.corradov8.com/pics/h10ean/h10ean_209.jpg

Push them in using the special tools

http://www.corradov8.com/pics/h10ean/h10ean_210.jpg

http://www.corradov8.com/pics/h10ean/h10ean_211.jpg

Ready to go back on

Oh, something else turned up in the workshop this week too...

It's really nice to see the car again. I was getting withdrawal symptoms :)
And how strange to see it with those 5 spoke wheels.

That weld seems to have gone well and I'm sure with some underseal over it the MOT inspector won't even know what was there previously.

I am not familiar with those new shiny bits that were in your second post.
Is it something I have spent some money on?? :D

(BTW your gearbox is being collected on Sunday morning).

MikkiJayne 13th October 2017 08:55 PM

Would you believe they came on those 16" wheels in some other markets? They are comically skinny for such a big car. Your 20s came straight off and went in to the store room as soon as the car went up in the air. They are waaay too nice to be kicking around the workshop!

There's very little distortion round the weld so with it finished at least the shape should be barely detectable. Time will tell whether I can match the underseal finish though.

The mounts in the second post are not for your car - they are for the next big project ;)

27litres 13th October 2017 09:56 PM

V6 engine mounts?

My first thought was gearbox mounts, but you said they were NLA. Would also expect a gearbox mount to be a rear cradle type, but on an alloy car...
